Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in pole position to be named Dapaah successor

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, along with two others are said to be in comfortable lead to replace Cecilia Abena Dapaah as Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources.

Other persons said to be under consideration include current Works and Housing Minister Francis Asenso Boakye and Osei Bonsu Amoah, currently a Minister of State in Charge of Local Government and Decentralization.

However, sources say President Akufo-Addo is inclined to trust Kyei Mensah Bonsu to repair the image of the sector after the Abena Dapaah saga.

If appointed, it would not be surprising as the Suame Lawmaker served as stand-in Minister of Finance when Ken Ofori-Atta was indisposed in 2021.

Many sources had hinted Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu could be named substantive Finance Minister if Ken Ofori-Atta had been unable to continue.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is serving a final term as Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency is trusted by President Akufo-Addo to replace Cecilia Abena Dapaah as his representative for the strategetic sector.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to speak to the shortlist including the Majority Leader when he returns to Ghana from the Vatican. A key consideration for the President is to Appoint someone who may not need to be vetted by the appointments committee.

The vaancy emerged after the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah resigned following a scandal over several foreign and local currencies her house helps allegedly stole from her residence.

In her resignation letter addressed to the President, Madam Dapaah said she decided to step down “because I do not want this matter to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time.”

It emerged on Friday, July 21 that two house helps of the Minister were facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an amount of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis at the former minister’s residence at Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2022.

The two, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei allegedly stole the monies and personal effects of the couple, between the months of July and October 2022.
