UN report exposes Ghana’s most significant bribe takers
In Ghana, the Lands Commission is reported to be the government agency where workers receive the highest number of bribes from individuals seeking the commission’s services.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) 2021 survey on People’s Experience in Paying Bribes in Ghana, workers at the Lands Commission receive an average of GHC 1,669 (Ghanaian cedi) as bribes from citizens.
Following the Lands Commission, prosecutors, judges, or magistrates are the next group to receive significant bribes, with an average of GHC 1,208. Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service receive an average of GHC 950 in bribes. On the other hand, the lowest average amount of GHC 91 is reported to be received by other health workers apart from doctors, nurses, and midwives.
The report highlights the variation in the size of bribes paid to different types of public officials, which depends on factors such as the purpose of the bribe, the services sought, and the location where the bribes are paid. It underscores that corruption remains a significant challenge in Ghana, drawing the attention of both politicians and citizens. Despite efforts to combat corruption, it continues to persist, with the UNODC survey shedding light on where such incidents are most prevalent.
