Cecilia Dapaah saga: Present evidence, not just denials, of cash retrievals – Beatrice Annan

Beatrice Annan, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, has raised questions about a letter sent by lawyers representing former sanitation minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The letter demanded a retraction and apology from Multimedia Group, the operators of Joy FM, Joy News, and other affiliates, for allegedly misreporting on monies found at Dapaah’s home.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on August 14, 2023, Annan criticized Dapaah’s denial and emphasized that it wasn’t sufficient for the lawyers to deny the content of the report without providing the actual facts. She pointed out that journalists were not obligated to reveal their sources and that Dapaah’s posture of mere denial wasn’t helpful, even in a legal context.

Annan noted that Dapaah, as a public figure and former minister, had a duty to the public to address the issues raised in the report and provide her version of the facts. She stated, “Journalists don’t have to tell you their source, so if you think that you have one million dollars or the Special Prosecutor did not retrieve 530,000 dollars and two million plus from your bedroom, you just have to come and say that what I have in my bedroom was maybe this or that.”

Annan further explained that a mere denial without providing an alternative version of the facts is not considered a valid denial in law. She called on Dapaah to address the specific claims made in the report and offer a clear statement about their accuracy.

The lawyers’ letter had demanded a retraction and apology for alleged misreporting on issues related to funds found at Dapaah’s home during a search by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and in her accounts with local banks.
