Mother of late Raphael Dwamena shares heartbreaking details on his passing
Ruby Akakpo, the mother of the late Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena, has opened up about the heartbreaking moment she received the news of her son’s demise.
Speaking on Onua Sports on Maakye on Onua FM/TV, Akakpo revealed that she had spoken to her son just two days before the fateful incident occurred on Saturday, November 11.
“I talked to Nana Kwame on Thursday,” he told host Captain Smart, adding that the footballer was constantly in touch with his family. “He talks to me all the time on a video call,” she said.
The family first learned about the incident through social media and subsequently contacted Dwamena’s manager to confirm the situation. As of now, they have not officially heard from his club, KF Egnatia.
Dwamena collapsed on the pitch during the 23rd minute of a match between KF Egnatia and Partizani in the Albanian league. Despite on-field medical care, he was pronounced dead while being transported to Kavaje Hospital.
Dwamena, who signed for FK Egnatia in 2022, had made 37 appearances and scored 24 goals for the club. At the time of his passing, he was the leading scorer with nine goals in the 2023/24 season.
Dwamena’s heart condition was initially detected during medicals with English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in 2017, leading to the club deciding not to sign him, however, he continued his football journey, playing for clubs in Spain, Denmark, Austria, and Switzerland before joining KF Egnatia.
Despite the family’s advice regarding his heart condition, Dwamena chose to pursue his passion for football. His mother shared, “So, we allowed him to play until a time when he will voluntarily stop.”
Dwamena was 28.
