Mahama is in bed with Kufuor; NDC must reject him - Stephen Ashitey

A former executive of the Tema East constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Stephen Ashitey Adjei, is calling on the delegates of the party to reject former president John Mahama in the party’s upcoming presidential primary.

At a press conference in Tema, Mr. Ashitey Adjei, who is popularly called Moshake, accused Mr. Mahama of being a longtime implant of former President John Agyekum Kufuor in the party as a safety measures against possible prosecution for corruption when he was president.

“After jailing persons like Tsatsu Tsikata and Victor Selormey, among others, Kufuor became afraid of being made to have a taste of his own medicine under an NDC government and so he leveraged on his relationship with Mahama and strategically sponsored him to lead the NDC,” Moshake told a crowd of journalists.

He added, “the strategic placement of Mahama in the front row of the NDC leadership was also purposed to insulate Kufuor from criminal prosecution over the many corruption scandals under his regime.”

The relationship Moshake refers to is through Mr. Mahama’s stepmother, Mrs. Joyce Tamakloe, who was very close to Mr. Kufuor and his family.

According to Moshake, former President Kufuor “has always been afraid of prosecution even from the Mills days, dreading what latter NDC presidents would do to him after his presidential immunity expired. And so, when Mahama became president, he used his relationship with his stepmother to position himself as a mentor.

“It is Kufuor who has been advising Mahama to keep on contesting for the presidential ticket of the NDC since 2012 so that he will always have his mentee in charge if NDC comes to power as a way of ensuring that he is not prosecuted for his past crimes.”

Moshake laments that for a long time, he has been telling the NDC this but the party has not paid heed hence its long stay in opposition.

“In regards to the 2024 election, Mr. Kufuor is as usual the driving force behind Mahama’s intent to run again even though his possible candidature will not be of any advantage to the NDC. Under the circumstance, what I can do is to call on the delegates of our party to snub Kufuor’s preferred candidate for us and rather elect an uncompromised and thoroughbred party man or woman for the 2024 ticket.

“This way, we will rid ourselves of Kufuor’s remote controlled influence on our party,” Moshake said.
