Your re-election comes at a crucial time when Africa is striving for economic recovery – Akufo-Addo tells Ramaphosa

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated Cyril Ramaphosa on his re-election as President of South Africa.

Mr Ramaphosa was sworn in for a second term as South Africa’s president, on Wednesday, June 19.

This was after the legislators voted overwhelmingly to re-elect the 71-year-old last week, after elections in May that produced no outright winner, forcing the ANC to strike deals with five other parties, including the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA), to form a government of national unity.

President Akufo-Addo in a statement on his Facebook page said his “re-election is a vindication of the trust and confidence reposed in you by the Members of the Parliament of South Africa, and by your party, the African National Congress (ANC).”

Below is Mr Akufo-Addo’s full statement…

On behalf of the people and government of Ghana, I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your re-election as President of the Republic of South Africa.

Your re-election is a vindication of the trust and confidence reposed in you by the Members of the Parliament of South Africa, and by your party, the African National Congress (ANC).

The South African people, through their vote, have demonstrated their commitment to unity and shared governance, and I am confident that under your leadership, South Africa will continue to reinforce her position as a champion of progress and prosperity on the African continent. A strong, united, and prospering South Africa is indeed a great force for progress in Africa.

Your re-election comes at a crucial time when the African continent is striving for economic recovery, social development and continental integration. I am confident that, under your continued leadership, South Africa will attain greater heights, and make significant strides towards the realisation of these goals.

The bond of friendship and cooperation between our two nations is strong, and I look forward to working closely with you to enhance further our bilateral relations, and to advance the collective interests of our beloved continent.

Together, we can achieve the aspirations of our people for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

May your new term be marked by continued success and progress for the people of South Africa. Please accept my best wishes for your health, happiness, and for the ongoing success of your administration.
