Ghana Rugby Hosts T1 End-of-Term Rugby Event for Schools at Kanda

The Ghana Rugby Football Union on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, hosted an exciting End-of-Term T1 Rugby event at the Kanda Cluster of Schools in Accra.

The event brought together pupils from about ten schools to experience the non-contact version of rugby in a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.

The program kicked off with thrilling demonstrations by players from Ghana’s national male and female rugby teams, showcasing the basics of T1 rugby to the enthusiastic school children.

Speaking to the media, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, Rafatu Inusah, expressed her appreciation to the participating teams, technical officials, and national team players for their support and enthusiasm.

"Today we are here for the T1 event, which is a non-contact form of rugby that is introduced to all schools and all unions,” she explained.

“We were recently in Morocco discussing the development of rugby through schools, universities, and the Olympic pathway, and T1 was again introduced to all members present.

T1 is going to be spread across so that schools, the elderly, adults, boys, and girls—everybody—can play it.”

She further highlighted the Union’s collaboration with educational institutions:

"Rugby Union is already in existence, and we are awaiting the Ghana Education Service to finally approve it so that rugby can be added to the school sports curriculum. This will allow it to be played in inter-school competitions and other events on the school sports calendar.”

Rafatu Inusah was also thrilled by the students' enthusiasm and participation on the day;  “I am happy about how the kids are picking up the exercise today, and I believe that with continued T1 events, Ghana Rugby will evolve, groom, and develop more players.”

"We have coaches and development officers in other regions, and we are going to reintroduce T1 to them so they can also take the kids through it and ensure continuous training and events in the coming days,” she added.

The T1 Rugby initiative is a key part of Ghana Rugby’s broader efforts to make the sport more inclusive and accessible, especially within the school system.
