5 dead, 19 injured in various electoral disturbances – Police

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has revealed that a total of 21 electoral disturbances were recorded nationwide in the just-ended polls.

According to the Service, five persons have been killed in various shooting incidents across the country while 19 others sustained various degrees of injuries from the incidents.

Breaking it down, the Police indicated that the Greater Accra Region’s Odododiodio constituency recorded two deaths while the Techiman South constituency in the Bono East Region also recorded two deaths.

Again, one death was reported dead in Savelugu constituency in the Northern Region.

In constituencies including the Central Region’s Awutu Senya East, (2) Odododiodio (6), Ablekuma Central (4), Techiman South (4) and Savelugu (3).

Ghana Police also highlighted that all the shooting incidents by civilians except in Techiman South where the security personnel fired shots to disperse a crowd that was attacking the electoral officer in the area.

Director of Public Affairs, Supt Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman in a signed statement on Wednesday condemned the disturbances noting that the various incidents could have been avoided.

Meanwhile, she commended the public for cooperating with the National Election Security Taskforce (NESTF) through the electioneering period.
