AFCON 2019 Qualifiers: 10 men Kenya beat Black Stars – Report
The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a first defeat in the 2019 AFCON qualifying on Saturday afternoon in Kasarani.
Defender Nicholas Opoku scored against his own side in the 40th minute after coming under pressure from Kenya striker Michael Olunga at the Moi International sports centre.
It was a bit dull first half as few goalscoring chances were created by both teams.
Majeed Waris saw his best effort goes wide in the 13th minute after being played through by midfielder Ebenezer Ofori.
The Nantes striker once again headed over the bar from an Andy Yiadom delightful cross from the right.
Ghana came under pressure in the 30th minute following a counter-attack by the home side but goalkeeper Richard Ofori came out of his area to force a corner.
The home side broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time when former Berekum Chelsea defender Opoku inadvertently put the ball into Richard Ofori’s net.
The second half began by Kwesi Appiah introducing Levante striker Raphael Dwamena for Edward Gyasi as the team moved from a 4-4-1-1 formation to a 4-4-2 set up with Dwamena and Waris as the two forwards up to boost the attack.
Despite an improved attacking football from the Stars Kwesi Appiah’s charges failed to break a resilient Kenya defence led by David Ochieng – later red-carded in the game.
Kenya was reduced to ten men as David Ochieng in jersey number 12 was sent off for fouling Ghana’s Christian Atsu on the edge of the Kenya penalty box but Thomas Partey’s freekick went straight into the Kenya human wall.
Harrison Afful came off the bench for Ebenezer Ofori in search of the equalizer but Kenya continued to lead.
Coach Appiah effected his last substitution by bringing on Kwadwo Asamoah for defender Daniel Opare in the 72nd in a move to increase the attacking firepower of the team but Sebastien Migné and his team would not lose concentration.
Ethiopia play Sierra Leone in the other group F game on Sunday.
The result hands Kenya a first win of the qualification whilst it is a fist defeat for the Black Stars who won 5-0 on the opening day of the qualifiers against Ethiopia.
