Appiah credits Akonnor for Stars victory

Coach Kwasi Appiah has attributed the Black Stars victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers to the hard work of his new assistant, C. K. Akonnor.

According to the Ghanaian gaffer, the work of an assistant coach was so crucial in the success of a team because during matches they are under less pressure and could critically observe and advise the coach over what to do.

Speaking at the post-match press conference in Cape Coast on Thursday, the 59-year-old coach said the presence of Akonnor on the bench has been very impactful as he played his role perfectly as an assistant of the team.

Akonnor was drafted into the Black Stars bench by Appiah to help in the team AFCON qualifiers double header against South African and Sao Tome and Principe to allow for Coach Ibrahim Tanko concentrate on his current role as the head coach of the Black Meteors.

Appiah said “for me is the assistant who does most of the work. If you are a head coach and you are out there sometimes your mind goes somewhere. Sometimes you might be looking at three or four players who are not playing well so.

“This is where you need your assistant to access the game because he knows our game plan and he knows our players so he might seat out there, come to you and let you know that why can’t we look at this because it is creating problems for us.

He said as a coach it was important that there existed a cordial relationship between the coach and his assistant so he assistant can properly observe the game and provide good information to the head regarding should be done at any time.

“So it is important that at any given time you coordinate very well with your assistant so that anytime he has to seat down quietly and access the game and give you information as to what you have to do. “There is not much that you can do as a coach when you are out there but they actually play and do much of the work for you”, Coach Appiah said.
