Asawase police station set ablaze; one police officer injured

Rampaging youth in Asawase, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on Thursday attacked the Asawase police station, injuring one police officer in the process.

According to report, the irate youth wielding cutlasses and machetes also attacked the Manhyia Government Hospital as staff of the health facility flee for their lives.

The attack, gathers, stems from the killing of seven suspected armed robbers by the police on Tuesday at Manso after armed robbers attacked passengers onboard a Sprinter bus with registration number AC-644-15 at Akirebikrom last week in which a police officer, Lance Corporal Tieku died.

The youth numbering over 200 reportedly set the police station ablaze demanding answers from the police.

In retaliation, the police gunned down these seven individuals, suspecting them of undertaking Wednesday’s robbery on the highway.

Barely 24 hours after the incident, relatives and close associates of the deceased have come out to accuse the police of killing innocent people, who had no hand in the robbery attack last week.

Three out of the seven so-called armed robbers have been identified as sympathizes of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) – a claim the MCE of Asokore Mampong, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, has corroborated.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) further joined in the condemnation, accusing the police of “extreme negligence”.

“These are people that I can never point a single finger at them to say that they have been involved in any act of armed robbery.

“So, it took me by surprise…not me alone, but throughout the community. Everybody is so [surprised] by the way the matter has unfolded but here we are,” the MCE is quoted as saying.

However,, understands that the Asawase police is currently being protected by armed military men and police officers.
