A reporter of the Ghana News Agency, Jerry Azanduna, has alleged that the founder of the All People’s Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga, on Tuesday instructed some hired thugs to beat him up at his residence in the Upper East Region.
The senior reporter of the GNA narrating his ordeal to journalists after the incident said a group of young men called to invite him to a press conference to be addressed by the APC leader.
Mr Azanduna adds that after agreement was reached for him to cover the event, the men decided to pick him up at an agreed location to the venue of the press conference, but little did he know they were going to molest him at the residence of Mr Ayariga at Bawku.
According to the journalist, upon reaching Mr Ayariga’s residence he ordered the youngmen who were five in number to “teach him a bitter lessons”.
According to Mr Azanduna, he was severely beaten in the presence of an armed policeman, who stood by helpless, leaving him to suffer bruises all over his body, including his eyes.
But for the timely intervention of the security personnel who rescued him, the reporter’s ordeal and fate would have been terrible.
The attack on the journalist comes after media reports suggested over the weekend that Mr Ayariga had been slapped by a trader in Bawku after a misunderstanding ensued between the two.
But Mr Ayariga on Monday debunked the reports suggesting the GNA reporter who broke the news failed to verify the information.
Mr Azanduna has however reported the incident to the Bawku police station and has been issued with a form to seek medical care at the hospital, Asempanews.com has gathered.
