Can You Use Your Dog’s CBD Oil?

Until recently, cannabidiol or CBD was not that well-known. For decades, the cannabis plant had been viewed with disapproval by society as the vehicle for creating ‘potheads’ who would graduate to using harder drugs.

People saw cannabis as a single compound, whereas it is comprised of more than 100 different substances. Among them is CBD, which has a growing reputation for its medicinal properties. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the more familiar compound in the cannabis plant. It is the one that causes the intoxicating effect of using cannabis, and many people believe that it is a gateway drug that leads to much more serious drug abuse.

While CBD and THC come from the same plant, they are not at all the same. CBD occurs in higher concentrations in the hemp plant, which belongs to the same plant family as the marijuana plant, which contains a lot of THC.

CBD for dogs

CBD’s efficacy is the subject of much research among scientists across the world. What we know at this stage is that it appears the substance has some healing properties, which are evident in canine and human subjects.

Among other things, dog owners swear by CBD oil products as helping dogs with anxiety, epilepsy, eczema, hyperactivity disorder, and joint pain. It is believed that CBD is effective because of its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which produces cannabinoids.

Their function is to regulate different bodily processes to achieve a state of balance called homeostasis. So, CBD helps to regulate the levels of different chemicals, neuroreceptors, and hormones in the body. These substances control mood, appetite, pain response, and sleep, among others.

Is your dog’s CBD oil different from yours?

In truth, the CBD products you buy for your dog should have an identical ingredient list as yours. The CBD should be manufactured from the leaves of the hemp plant using the same production process.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stringent regulations on the labeling of products for human consumption, including ingredients lists. The rules are a lot more relaxed than that when it comes to products for animal consumption. Something that the organization does not allow is the dual-labeling of a product as suitable for human and animal use.

That allows you to draw the obvious conclusion that you could use your dog’s CBD oil without any ill effects at all. However, you might not want to for one simple reason: the flavor. Most doggie CBD products are flavored to suit the canine palate, with bacon flavoring being the most common. So, if you’re not a fan of bacon, you might not like to use your dog’s CBD product.

The opposite conclusion is then also true, and your dog will be fine if you treat it with human CBD oil products. However, you might find it hard to get them to ingest it if it isn’t attractively flavored.

Why do CBD products vary so much in pricing?

Here are some factors that affect how CBD oil products for dogs and humans are priced:

The concentration of CBD per milliliter of oil will play a vital role in determining the price of the product. Products with lower concentrations of CBD will cost less.

Another important factor is the production process the manufacturer uses when extracting the CBD from the hemp leaves. There are three main extraction methods, namely supercritical CO2 extraction, ethanol extraction, and hydrocarbon extraction.

Some require expensive, sophisticated equipment and expertise, while others involve the application of cheap yet potentially harmful chemicals. The nature of the extraction process will affect the price of the product. It’s essential to research how the manufacturer produces the CBD product and choose one that is more organically and less synthetically produced.

Before you buy a CBD product

As CBD products are not that tightly controlled by the FDA, there is room for charlatans who sell inferior quality products that won’t be effective. Research the products you intend to buy to make sure that the manufacturer or retailer is established and has a good reputation.

Make sure that you know the regulations governing the purchase and use of CBD in your state of residence. The rules aren’t the same in all states, and it’s advisable to know where you stand to avoid getting into any legal troubles.
