Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta says Man City thumping is a career low

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta says the 6-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester City is “one of the worst nights of my career”.

Azpilicueta, who captained the team, conceded the penalty which led to City’s fifth goal.

The Spaniard has led Chelsea to two of their heaviest Premier League defeats in the last two weeks, which has left head coach Maurizio Sarri under increasing pressure.

Azpilicueta told Chelsea’s official website: “It’s difficult to find the words to describe my feeling after the game.

“It is one of the worst nights in my career. It’s very frustrating, it’s very disappointing. When you lose 6-0 everyone has to accept they didn’t play well, we made errors that in big games like this you cannot make.

“When we won against them at Stamford Bridge it was because we played a very good game all together. This time It was not the case.

“The only thing I can say to the fans is sorry, because it’s not acceptable, and I feel sorry for all of them.”

The club dropped two places over the weekend after their thrashing in Manchester, while there were victories for both Arsenal at Huddersfield and Manchester United at Fulham.

Chelsea face Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday.

Before that, Chelsea go to Sweden on Thursday looking to score away from home for the first time in 2019 when they take on Malmo in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.
