‘Controversy’ makes Dr. Bawumia WITHDRAW last-minute from Tamale Awards
The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has withdrawn from attending a controversial awards in Tamale dubbed the Mayors Excellence Awards ceremony scheduled for today in Tamale by the city mayor, Musah Superior; MyNewsGH.com has learnt.
Alhaji Dr Bawumia was billed as the special guest of honor and he had confirmed attending the ceremony but canceled the invitation few hours to the event.
The decision comes amidst widespread feeling of anger and sadness in Tamale following a fatal accident yesterday that killed six teenagers and injured several others after a heavy truck rammed into a music crowd holding a street jamboree to welcome popular musician, Fancy Gadam and his Nigerian counterpart, Patoranking, ahead of a well advertised music concert at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
The Mayor of Tamale went on radio to attack ‘Gadam Nation fans’ and their leader Fancy Gadam for being ‘irresponsible and lawless’, accusing him of using the blood of the dead to enrich his talent and wealth.
Gadam Fans are boycotting the award in protest and mourning while some took to social media to pour scorn on the 180,000 cedis event.
Many indigenes of Tamale, while admitting to the necessity of rewarding hard work and excellence, have questioned the cost of the award, among many other public grievances, facts which the Vice President’s Office which has its ‘eyes and ears’ in the Vice President’s home region, may not be oblivious of.
The Awards is to identify distinguished personalities and organizations and celebrate their efforts to development of the metropolis.
