Covid-19: Fasting & prayers good but strategy is crucial – Mahama to Gov’t

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated that the Akufo-Addo administration needs a workable plan to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The former leader claimed that the state ought to do something extra beyond the fasting and prayers else the nation is likely to be overwhelmed by a possible surge in cases of the coronavirus.

Mr. Mahama indicated that government must “project the course of this disease while taking a cue from best and worst-case response scenarios such as Korea and Italy even as the world accelerates research towards the production of a vaccine.”

He made the point during a service streamed online to mark the end of the NDC’s three days of fasting and prayers over the covid-19 pandemic.

He stressed: “Our leaders owe this nation not just prayers but a plan too. One that all of us can believe in, that we can rally around, and that we can commit our hearts and mind to. For while hope brings comfort, it is not in itself a strategy,” Mr. Mahama said.

The supposed national plan, as reckoned by the NDC Presidential candidate must also include “ensuring that frontline health care workers as a matter of urgency have the manuals, appropriate training and protective logistics to boost their confidence in fighting this disease.”

President Akufo Addo has declared Wednesday, 25th March 2020 a national day of fasting and prayers in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The President in a national broadcast on Saturday night asked Ghanaians to “pray to God to protect our nation and save us from this pandemic.”

Ghana recorded additional 2 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday bringing the tally to 21.

The West African nation also recorded its first death of the deadly plague earlier on Saturday.

Ghana has tightened the nooks in its fight against the covid-19 pandemic as President Akufo-Addo late Saturday in a national broadcast announced the closure of all the country’s borders effective Sunday midnight.
