Dampare has no power to remand anybody – Lawyer Ampaw fires

It appears the Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service COP George Akuffo Dampare has no hand in the remand of popular dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly known as Shatta Wale and Medikal at the Ankaful prison. The name of COP George Akuffo Dampare has been trending for the past days after the two, including others, were arrested for misconduct.

COP George Akuffo Dampare’s name further went viral after the two were remanded to prison custody.

Many are praising him for the swift action in ensuring the laws of the country work on Shatta Wale and Medikal irrespective of their positions in the country. There are however others who are in disagreement with the arrests and remand.

A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has signaled Ghanaians that, COP George Akuffo Dampare has no power to remand anybody in Ghana. In this vein, lawyer Maurice Ampaw is trying to communicate that the IGP cannot be praised or otherwise for the predicament of Shatta Wale and Medikal at the Ankaful prison.

The police administration which COP George Akuffo Damper leads only has the power to arrest and detain suspects. They are also responsible for parading any suspect to the court but the remand aspect lies in the bosom of the judge adjudicating the case.

The job of the prosecutors is to build a strong case against the accused of the judge to pronounce judgment. This is a clear indication that COP George Akuffo Dampare and the police command have no power again over the judgment of an accused person. However, the zeal of COP George Akuffo Dampare in arresting anyone who breaks the law is enough to receive praises.

On the reasons why Shatta Wale and Medikal were not granted bail, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw blames the judge for refusing to free them. Shatta Wale, for instance, reported himself to the police and confessed to spreading fake news. With this, lawyer Maurice Ampaw indicates on Wuntumi Televisions’ ‘Mma ne abrabo mu nsem’ program that there are no investigations to be made again because the suspect had already confessed. This was enough grounds for the judge to have granted the rapper bail but he is cooling off in prison custody. The fact that COP George Akuffo Dampare arrested popular personalities for their lawlessness is enough for Ghanaians to offer him all the praises he deserves.
