Is Prof Naana Opoku Agyemang's running mate position in limbo?
Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the former 2020 Running Mate of Opposition Leader John Mahama, is facing an uphill battle to secure a re-nomination for the 2024 election as Mahama’s running mate.
Recently returning to the country after being abroad for medical reasons, she is now engaged in lobbying and appealing to be considered once again despite her disappointing performance in the 2020 election for the opposition.
During her 2020 campaign, the aged professor failed to garner support in her home base of Central Region, where she was expected to inspire women voters and fellow academics. Additionally, criticism has been directed towards her sense of fashion and charisma within her own party, the NDC.
In her current efforts, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is resorting to addressing students at Colleges of Education with “Lemons and Lemonades” speeches. However, some students have expressed confusion over her message, and there are suspicions that some were asked to praise her for the cameras.
Her political standing has diminished to the extent that former allies have abandoned her, and many influential figures in the Central Region believe she does not adequately represent their interests if Mahama intends to include them on his ticket for 2024. Instead, some are advocating for the consideration of alternative candidates like Cassiel Ato Forson, the new Godfather of the region, Julius Debrah, Kingsley Kwame Awuah Darko, Joshua Alabi, Alex Kofi Mensah Mould, Sylvester Mensah, and Patrick Awuah, all of whom are deemed to be more deserving and highly qualified for the position.
