Since Assin North by-election, IGP Dampare has faced constant unrest, Randy Abbey discloses
Randy Abbey, the host of Metro TV’s “Good Morning Ghana,” has emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been facing significant challenges since the Assin North by-election on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
Abbey explained that the IGP has been under intense scrutiny, with certain individuals seeking his removal from his position before the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Abbey’s remarks are in response to a leaked audio recording that revealed senior police officers discussing plans to oust IGP Dampare.
During his show on August 2, 2023, he remarked, “We’ve heard complaints about the IGP and discussions about his removal, suggesting that 2024 would be difficult if he remains in office. Since the Assin North election up to today, IGP Dampare has faced relentless challenges.”
It’s worth noting that a series of secret recordings exposed a plot by high-ranking officials from the ruling New Patriotic Party and the Ghana Police Service to remove IGP Dampare from his position before the 2024 elections.
Concerned by his leadership approach and alleged ties to the opposition National Democratic Congress, the group, recorded during a covert meeting, concluded that the NPP’s “Breaking the 8” campaign would be hindered with Dampare as the head of the police.
Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional chairman of the NPP, was interrogated by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for his involvement in the leaked tape against Dampare.
In addition to Bugri Naabu, the NIB also questioned Bugri Naabu’s personal assistant, known as S.K., and the receptionist at his office named Akua, according to Asaase Radio.
COP Alex Mensah, alleged to be central to the anti-Dampare plot, was also interrogated by the authorities.
