The Cocoa farmer is worse off than he was 7 years ago, Sammy Gyamfi jabs Nana Addo

With no shred of doubt in his mind, A National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi said the President of the Republic of Ghana has shortchanged Cocoa farmers in unprecedented manner.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, on Metro TV, Sammy Gyamfi emphasized that Cocoa farmers are worse off than they were 7 years ago due to gross incompetence and economic mismanagement under the Nana Addo led administration.

“Government should not have cheated Cocoa farmers again but should have given the Cocoa farmer their fair share of minimum 65% of the Free On Board (FOB) price which would have been close to 2,000 cedis or even more. Today the Cocoa farmer is worst than he was 7 years ago because of inflation and the degradation of his purchasing power.

Sammy Gyamfi explained that the production volume of Cocoa has declined to a 15 year low, a “nauseating” situation he said could have been avoided if the President and his apparatchiks had put proper mechanisms in place and paid the farmers their due.

“When President Mahama was leaving office, the production of cocoa in Ghana stood at 969,000 metric tons, the second highest in the history of Ghana, almost 1 million tons but today because of mismanagement, galamsey, and smuggling which smuggling is occasioned by cheating the farmer. Today the volume has reduced to 650,000 from almost 1 million. This simply means a cocoa farmer who was doing about 100 bags per year is now doing between 60 and 70 bags, straight away you know that the disposable income has gone down, and that is why you must show sensitivity to their plight.” He said.
