Giving Back to Society: an overview of the Edusei Foundation’s projects in 2023
Introduction
The Edusei Foundation continues
to support women and youth development agenda through a number of projects and
donations against the backdrop of an ever-growing demand for socio-economic
advancement in Ghana. A summary of the Foundation’s activities in the past year
covers three major projects and one collaborative venture with other
philanthropists with like passion.
Humanitarian efforts by the Edusei
Foundation have mostly been directed towards schools, health facilities and
orphanages to resolve infrastructural and consumables deficits to ensure
seamless operation of these beneficiary institutions. The scope of projects
underpins the core mandate of the Foundation, which is to empower women and the
younger generation and contribute to poverty alleviation initiatives by the
government and other civil society organisations.
Edusei Foundation’s Portfolio of Projects
The portfolio of the Foundation’s activities in 2023
included renovation works and construction of bore holes for Kumasi Academy
Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, Kumasi Children’s Home
and Donyina Methodist School.
At Kumasi Academy Senior High
School, the Foundation renovated two girls’ dormitories and two bathrooms which
were in deplorable conditions. Consequently, the two dormitories received a
comprehensive make-over with the repair of walls, flooring and other
installments, thus creating a more comfortable and conducive space for female
students to rest and sleep after classes. Additionally, two bathrooms were
renovated to ensure improved sanitation and hygiene among students.
At Kumasi Academy Senior High
School, the Foundation, recognizing the water scarcity challenge faced by the
school, invested beyond structural improvements to construct a borehole to
provide a reliable and sustainable source of potable water for the students.
This vital resource was then linked to strategically placed water reservoirs,
thereby ensuring constant water storage and supply to adjoining dormitories and
bathrooms. The project was commissioned on 8th May, 2023 by board
members of the Foundation.
At Yaa Asantewaa Senior High
School, the humanitarian works of Edusei Foundation continued unabated as it
undertook some impactful initiatives which saw the rehabilitation of the
largest bathroom in the school. This
upgrade featured new fixtures, tiling and other repair works to promote better
hygiene and contribute to the overall well-being of the girls. The renovated
facility was commissioned on 20th July 2023 in a modest but joyful
ceremony which was witnessed by staff, students and board members of the Edusei
Foundation.
In a separate gesture of
philanthropy, the Edusei Foundation visited Kumasi Children’s Home - a haven
for underprivileged children - on 5th June 2023. During the visit,
the Foundation provided much-needed food supplies and toiletries, ensuring that
the children's basic needs were met to boost the morale of the dedicated staff members.
Dormitories at the orphanage also benefitted from a facelift and the floors
were fully tiled. This act offered not only essential resources but also breathed
a message of hope and support to demonstrate the Foundation's commitment to the
well-being of vulnerable youth.
The Edusei Foundation, in
collaboration with Mrs. Claudia Amaniampong and Mama Ode Kufuor, extended her
philanthropic works to Donyina Methodist School with the construction of a new
classroom block and a borehole. The project was conceived by Mrs. Claudia
Amaniampong and Mama Ode Kufuor after witnessing a heart-breaking scene of
pupils studying under trees. Moved by the plight and sight of toddlers
passionately studying under these despicable conditions, they swiftly mobilized
resources to construct a new classroom block for the pupils. Their
philanthropic gesture later caught the attention of Dr. and Mrs. Bawuah-Edusei,
who, similarly touched, generously supported them in constructing the classroom
block and crowned this project by drilling a borehole to provide potable water
for the school. The new school building and borehole were completed and
commissioned in a colourful ceremony in April, 2023.
Background of Edusei Foundation
Dr. Kwame Bawuah-Edusei, an
American-based medical practitioner and his wife, Mrs. Evangeline Bawuah-Edusei
and family, established the Edusei Foundation in 2013 to invest in the Ghanaian
society by helping to empower women and the younger generation. Since its
inception, the Edusei Foundation has successfully commissioned and executed a
number of projects, including the construction of clinics, libraries,
rehabilitation of schools and orphanages.
