Francis Obeng, Ivy Nartey Win 2024 Greater Accra Region Super Zonal Badminton Competition
Francis Obeng from Presbyterian Senior High School, Osu (PRESEC), and Ivy Nartey from Osudoku Secondary Technical High School emerged as champions in the 2024 Greater Accra Region Super Zonal Badminton competition, held at the Ada Technical Institute on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
In the boys' singles division, Obeng triumphed over Desmond Billy of Achimota Senior High School to claim first place. Edmond Mintah of West Africa Senior High School (WASS) and Julius Osabutey of Osudoku Secondary Technical High School secured third and fourth places, respectively.
In the girls' singles division, Nartey defeated Benedicta Teye of Tema Senior High School (Temasco) for the top spot. Miriam Kemeh of WASS and Peggy Agyemfra of Achimota Senior High School finished in third and fourth places, respectively.
The competition saw the participation of ten schools, comprising fifteen teams and sixty students, marking the highest turnout in the past five years. Participating schools included Osu PRESEC, Osudoku, WASS, Achimota, Accra Academy, Labone SHS, Prampram Senior High, Accra Girls, Kpone Senior High, and Temasco. Each school had previously won in their respective zones.
The winners will be invited to represent the Greater Accra region at the Regional Schools Festival in September in the Western Region.
Mr. Yeboah Evans, President of the Ghana Badminton Association, was present at the event. In an interview with the media, he praised the growing popularity of badminton across the country and encouraged students to take advantage of the educational and sports benefits the sport offers by participating in Badminton Schools Championship events. He noted that the competition provided a perfect opportunity for teamwork and competitive enjoyment of the sport.
