Over US$3million paid to GBC for coverage of African Games – Sports Minister
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, revealed that the government paid over US$3 million to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for broadcasting the 2023 All African Games.
The 13th African Games, held in Ghana from March 8 to March 23, 2024, spanned 15 days and were broadcast live by the state broadcaster.
During a Public Accounts Committee session on Monday, August 19, 2024, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, questioned the Sports Minister about the exact amount charged by GTV for its coverage of the games.
In response, Mustapha Ussif confirmed, “GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th African Games, and we can confirm that full payment has been made to GBC.”
He added, “I can’t recall the exact amount, but I know it exceeds US$3 million.”
Sam George has pledged to further investigate GBC officials when they appear before the Committee.
The Ghanaian government invested US$195 million in the construction of facilities for the 2023 African Games. Additionally, the state provided accommodation and meals for athletes and officials from the participating countries.
Ghana secured a total of 69 medals at the 2023 African Games.
