Walewale NPP primary re-run declared null and void after voter disruption

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale Constituency primary held on Monday as null and void.

This followed the disruption of the ballot sorting, which led to the destruction of some ballot papers.

The EC has consequently referred the decision to the party to take a decision on the way forward since it was an internal party event to select a nominee to contest the December parliamentary election on the ticket of the party.

Before the deadline for the Walewale constituency’s nominations for the December 2024 parliamentary election closes at the end of this week, the party must now decide on a new date for the election.

After the primary site was rescheduled earlier in the day, the voting procedure itself proceeded without a hitch.

One person tried to flee with some ballot papers that were stolen during the sorting process following the vote, which concluded at around 4 p.m. There are reports that he tore up some voting papers.

However, the police stepped in, gathered the documents, and took the suspect into custody.

The suspect is currently in police custody.
