Police arrest protesters on day 2 of Democracy Hub demonstrations
The police arrested several Democracy Hub demonstrators at the 37 Roundabout in Accra on the second day of a planned three-day protest against Ghana’s economic challenges.
Initially focused on economic grievances, the protest took a surprising turn, evolving into an anti-galamsey (illegal mining) demonstration.
The arrests came after the police warned protesters against reassembling at the same location as the previous day.
While authorities have yet to issue an official statement detailing the number of arrests or potential charges, reports estimate that approximately 20 protesters were detained.
In addition to making arrests, the police reportedly seized mobile phones from those taken into custody.
Unlike the chaotic traffic disruptions of Day One, when protesters blocked key roads, traffic at the 37 Roundabout remained smooth on Day Two.
