CAF orders Akwasi Appiah to resign either as Sudan Coach or GFA Exco member
By: Bernard Nyankomago Kwasi
Coach Kwasi Appiah will have to choose between being a head coach of the Sudanese national team or Executive Committee Member (Exco) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with immediate effect.
This follows an order from the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) that Kwasi Appiah's desire to hold both positions ahead of the big AFCON game between Ghana and Sudan create an apparent conflict of interest.
"It has cone to our notice that you are currently holding two significant positions; member of the GFA Executive Council and Head Coach of Sudan's National Football team.
"As you already know, Ghana and Sudan are set to face each other on the 11th and 14th October 2024. Your dual role creates an apparent conflict of interest.
"This is contrary to CAF statutes and FIFA Code of Ethics. For that reason and to preserve the integrity of the AFCON qualifiers, I urge to take immediate action to resolve the conflict of interest, including at a minimum, temporarily stepping down one of these roles".
These instructions were contained in a statement released from CAF Headquarters on Monday and signed by Felix Majani, Director of Legal Affairs.
The Black Stars will lock horns with Sudan on Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium. The return fixture is slated for Benghazi on 14th October 2024.
