Alban Bagbin must be Speaker again - Ashanti Women’s Group

A group of women in the Ashanti region has demanded that the current Speaker of Parliament must be maintained.

“Preferably, we would have loved to have a law that makes it possible to make the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin a permanent fixture but we are aware that the Speakership is an elected position and so we are appealing to all the parties involved to commit to retaining the Rt. Hon. Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament,” said Sheila Tokar, spokesperson of the group.

Based in Obuase, the group which is a loose association of public-spirited women said maintaining Bagbin, will be a reasonable service that any of the parties can do for Ghana.

“In life you do not fix what is not broken, you do not change what is good and you do not unnecessarily re-invent the wheel. Bagbin is the best Speaker this country has ever had and therefore we demand that he be maintained from 2025.”

Madam Sheila Tokar made the demand on behalf of her group in an interview on the sidelines of a program at Obuase, Ghana’s most famous mining town. The Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has a reputation as the best Speaker that Ghana’s fourth republican parliament has had.

For many, it was providential that Bagbin, the longest serving parliamentarian in the Fourth Republic was elected the Speaker of the 8th Parliament which is actually hung.It is believed that if anyone else had been elected Speaker, the fragile fault line in Parliament between the NPP and the NDC would have often erupted into conflicts and debacles.

However, because Bagbin is mature and also respected by his colleagues from both sides of the political divide, he has instilled calm and respect over the hung parliament.

“Democracy is not a perfect form of government, however, of all the available forms of government, it is the best. Ideally, everybody would want a government that is presided over by perfect people. However, because there are no perfect people, you do your best to keep great people who come along.

“Speaker Bagbin is one such rare greats that we must keep, going forward,” Madam Sheila Tokar, who is a beautician and a business owner in Greater Accra said.

“Many Ghanaians throughout the country including Volta, Western, Eastern and Central regions want Speaker Bagbin to be honoured by the whole nation in a grand style because of his mega contribution to the country’s democracy, look at how Speaker Bagbin is respected in international circles because of his brilliance! In fact, we are not surprised that the chiefs and people of the Upper West region want Speaker Bagbin to be retained,”Madam Sheila Tokar, who was flanked by several women added.
