"We Don’t Need to Start as a University” – Kofi Adams Outlines Vision for Borteyman Sports Complex
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has revealed that plans are still underway to transform the Borteyman Sports Complex into an academic hub, beginning with a college model as part of Ghana’s broader sports education development.
Speaking during a working visit to the Borteyman facility on 7th July, the Minister indicated that while the dream of establishing a sports university remains intact, the practical approach would be to begin gradually by using the space as a college or training center; “We don’t need to start as a university straight away. We can even begin more as a college a learning point,” he stated.
“We need to make arrangements to ensure the facility is used regularly, whether for training purposes, for regular competitions, or for people coming here to learn.”
Hon. Adams said the long term strategy includes upgrading the existing Winneba Sports College into a university, while Borteyman serves as a satellite campus due to its superior infrastructure; “Our plan truly is to upgrade Winneba Sports College to a university and use this place also as part of the campus, as a satellite campus,” he revealed.
“There are more facilities here than maybe we have at Winneba. Lecture halls and other structures are already in place. " He emphasized that combining the strengths of both facilities will accelerate the development of a comprehensive sports education system in Ghana, producing well-trained professionals in coaching, sports medicine, management, and performance.
“A combination of the two facilities will help us push this agenda. It’s something that is still on course and we will continue with it,” he concluded.
The idea forms part of the Ministry’s broader vision to position Ghana not only as a destination for major sporting events but also as a center for sports education, research, and talent development in Africa.
The Sector Minister seized the opportunity to call on Cooperate Ghana and institutions to help them make the dream a reality.
