Citizens International Hockey Club Celebrates 40 Years of Legacy, Unity, and Excellence
Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch was filled with pride, nostalgia, and joy as Citizens International Hockey Club celebrated its 40th anniversary in grand style.
The historic event brought together past executives, veteran players, current club members, and invited hockey teams, as the club marked four decades of excellence in the sport and community development.
The anniversary celebration featured the hoisting of the club’s flag, an exhibition of memorabilia, and a heartfelt minute of silence in honor of departed members. It was not only a time of reflection but also a moment to reconnect, share stories, and renew the club’s commitment to fostering sportsmanship and community spirit.

Mr. Kwame Owusu, Chairman of Citizens International, delivered a moving opening address that traced the club's humble beginnings to its current status as one of Ghana’s most respected hockey institutions; "from our humble beginnings, we have seen this club thrive up to today. Citizens have come a very long way. We witnessed countless matches, celebrated victories, and learned from defeats. Through it all, our club has remained a symbol of teamwork, sportsmanship, and community spirit," he said.
He recounted how the club formed in 1985 by hockey veterans, played its first match at the 37th Military Hockey Pitch, a game he humorously recalled as “a wrong game,” but one that marked the start of a powerful journey.
"To our founding members, we salute your vision, your perseverance, and your legacy continues to inspire us. To our players and non-playing members, your hard work and dedication have made our club shine like a shooting star," he added.
"The essence of this picture gallery, which we are showcasing today, is to display, preserve, and promote our heritage. It also offers a platform for art appreciation, creative learning, and community engagement," he explained.
Retired Colonel Armah led the ceremonial hoisting of the Citizens International flag and took members through the meaning of the club’s colours, emphasizing the values and pride they represent.
The President of Ghana Hockey and a proud member of Citizens International, Dr. K.D. Asante highlighted the club’s impact beyond just playing the sport.
"We are happy and proud of our achievements so far — from equipment support and nurturing of talents to other community works.
This is not just a club but a family that is each other’s keeper. We encourage people to join, learn hockey the right way from us, and let’s make a change together," he told the media.
Madam Joyce Datsa, the Central Regional NSA boss and another proud club member, expressed her deep gratitude to the club for shaping her life and career.
"This is what sports is about, it's all about family and a sense of belonging. I’ve learnt new history about my beloved club that I didn’t know. They groomed me to become who I am today. I’m now an international technical official thanks to their guidance and support, and I’m truly grateful," she shared.
As Citizens International Hockey Club marks this remarkable milestone, the focus now shifts to building an even stronger future.
With a renewed commitment to developing young talent, promoting unity through sport, and upholding the values that have defined the club for four decades, Citizens is poised to write new chapters of success, legacy, and impact in the years ahead.
