Salpholda Hockey League Ends Round One with Dramatic Clashes and Passionate Performances

The Salpholda Hockey League wrapped up round one of the season on Saturday, July 19, 2025, with thrilling encounters from both the Men’s and Masters divisions at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch.

In the opening game, GRA Men faced Arkmen, with both sides coming off previous losses and eager to redeem themselves. Arkmen took an early lead with a brilliantly angled goal from Alisu in the 10th minute.

GRA responded in the second quarter with a penalty corner goal by Luke Damalie, before doubling their tally through another penalty conversion from Matthew Damalie.

Arkmen, undeterred, pushed forward and levelled the game at 2-2 in the 56th minute with a goal by Shaibu.

However, GRA sealed a hard-fought 3-2 victory with a final penalty corner in the dying moments of the match.

After the game, an Arkmen player reflected on their performance:
“We tried our possible best. Our technical coach was doing all the possible best to make sure we keep up to their standard because their very last match, they considered flatly—we were 7-0. So they had extra training. We also had our extra training because we lost our last match too.

And this being our last match for the first round, we wanted to prove to them that, no, we still have the academy spirit within us.”

He added, “Everything went well. They kept pushing, and we also kept pushing back. I've got grace. One has to lose, one has to win. So, unfortunately, we took the loss today. We had great fun and we had a great game.”

In the Masters division, Financiers fell narrowly to Commercial Bank’s Golden Sticks by 1-0, while reigning champions Multi Stix edged out Citizens International 2-1.

Citizens International captain, Lebene, expressed his disappointment; "we are disappointed with the results because we had a lot of penalty corners and couldn’t utilise our chances, but we will continue to come back stronger to complete our mission.”

Back in the Men’s division, Police and Legonknights played to a 1-1 draw, as did Army Men and Exchequers in a tightly contested final match.

The first round of the Salpholda Hockey League ends with intensity, promise, and a sense of unfinished business—setting the stage for an action-packed second round.
