Ghana Armwrestling Heroes Return with Medals, Seek Stronger Support
The Ghana National Armwrestling Team, Golden Arms, has returned from Abuja, Nigeria, with an outstanding medal haul, reaffirming their dominance on the international stage.
The 24-member team—comprising men and women drawn from various security agencies paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, to express appreciation and request stronger institutional support for the sport's growth in Ghana.
Prior to their departure, the team underwent months of intense training and engaged with the Minister, whose efforts in securing sponsorship and logistical support were instrumental in the team's successful participation.
Their performance was stellar, earning;
24 Gold Medals
9 Silver Medals
20 Bronze Medals
And a prestigious trophy
With this victory, the Golden Arms have now amassed a total of 405 international medals since 2007, a remarkable feat highlighting both their consistency and the rising popularity of armwrestling in Ghana.
During their visit, the team showcased their medals and reiterated their commitment to developing the sport.
They called for the establishment of a national training centre and appealed to the Ministry to help facilitate strategic meetings with Parliament and the Presidency to advocate for long-term investment in armwrestling.
Hon. Kofi Adams, while commending their achievements, acknowledged the Federation’s long-term investment in grassroots development and the discipline of the athletes.
He emphasized the role of integrating sports talents into the security services, aligning with recent presidential initiatives to create employment through sports.
Although Ghana faced initial entry challenges that delayed their start in the Abuja competition, the Minister assured that steps are being taken to address such issues to allow smooth participation in future regional and international tournaments.
He also urged corporate Ghana to invest in promising sports like armwrestling, stating that sponsorship and partnerships are critical to the success of federations. Looking ahead, he highlighted Ghana’s commitment to participating in the 2027 Africa Games in Egypt, promising that the Ministry would fully support the Golden Arms in their preparations.
The Hon. Minister reaffirmed his dedication to pushing Ghana further on the international armwrestling stage, including efforts to establish a dedicated national training hub to groom future champions.
With unwavering government backing, support from the private sector, and strong grassroots initiatives, Ghana's armwrestling journey looks brighter than ever, uniting the nation through strength, pride, and perseverance.
