Ghana Set to Welcome King’s Baton on August 8 Ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Ghana Olympic Committee has announced that the prestigious King’s Baton Relay will arrive in Ghana on August 8, 2025, as part of the build-up to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The King’s Baton Relay, a celebrated tradition symbolizing unity and friendly competition among the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, will this year adopt a unique format.

Each participating country will receive a baton to customize and decorate, showcasing their rich cultural identity.

This significant event not only promotes sportsmanship but also highlights environmental sustainability—particularly efforts aimed at reducing plastic pollution in marine environments.

Ghana's participation in the relay reflects the nation's continued commitment to advancing sports, culture, and environmental protection.

Activities scheduled for August 8, 9, and 12 include plastic clean-ups, cultural celebrations, student engagements, and courtesy calls on chiefs and dignitaries.

The commemorations will feature a special visit from His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.

“We are excited to participate in the King’s Baton Relay and contribute to the global effort in reducing plastic pollution and imbibing the Commonwealth values in the Ghanaian and young athletes,” said Commonwealth Sports–Ghana President, Richard Akpokavie Esq.

He added that the event presents a valuable platform to celebrate Ghana’s heritage while reinforcing the nation’s dedication to sustainability.
