Bernard Yawson Wins Maiden TPG Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in Ghana

Bernard Yawson made history by winning the inaugural Tennis Professionals Ghana (TPG) Wheelchair Tennis Ranking Tournament, cementing his status as Ghana’s top wheelchair tennis player.

The two-day tournament, held from July 25 to 26 at the Accra Sports Stadium, marked a significant milestone in the growth of wheelchair tennis in Ghana.

Organized through a partnership between Tennis Professionals Ghana (TPG) and the Ghana Tennis Federation’s Wheelchair Tennis Unit, the event featured 12 elite para-athletes, including two standout female players.

In an electrifying final, Yawson overcame a determined Daniel Laryea, clinching the title with a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory.

The win earned him the title of TPG Tour 4 Number 1 Wheelchair Tennis Champion.

The competition saw the participation of top talents such as Maclean Astu Dzidzienyo, Bridget Nartey, Abdul Razak Nuhu, and Stacy Konadu Mensah, who thrilled spectators with their skill, resilience, and sportsmanship.

National Coordinator for Ghana Wheelchair Tennis, Mr. Henry Larbi, commended TPG for organizing the landmark tournament and revealed plans to formalize the collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening the wheelchair tennis arm of the TPG Tour.

Winner Bernard Yawson described the tournament as a game-changer, saying, “This event is a crucial step in preparing us for international tournaments. It gives us the competitive edge we need ahead of major ITF Wheelchair Tennis events in Poland and beyond.”

The successful staging of this tournament is a promising step toward developing wheelchair tennis in Ghana and enhancing opportunities for para-athletes to shine on both local and global stages.
