NPP Fixes ‘Time-frame’ for Presidential, Parliamentary Primaries and More
Credible sources inside the New Patriotic Party have hinted this portal that the NPP by consensus intends to hold its presidential and parliamentary primaries between September and December 2023.
The source told MyNewsGh.com all the various groups agree about the proposed timing with only one faction proposing July-August but almost all others, including Jubilee House agree with the last quarter proposal.
The NPP is therefore expected to hold two levels of elections for the presidential aspirants to sieve them to 5 before the main congress. There is also tension, sources add, whether both the Presidential and parliamentary election should be held on the same day as their delegates list vary slightly.
Some camps believe Vice President Bawumia who retains the support of over 90% of sitting MPs stands to gain if the two are separated as it will give his MPs enough time to focus on sweeping votes for him on primaries day. Other aspirants are reportedly pushing for holding both election on same day to counteract that advantage.
The NPP twice met but failed to reach a specific decision. The meeting had initially been postponed from January 31 to February 2, following the absence of many of the Council members on the earlier date but actually because the parties could not agree.
President Akufo-Addo is said to be a key proponent of the Last Quarter proposal and prefers the election is held in December, just in the time the party constitution stipulates.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen among others have declared intention to contest the flagbearership slot and lead the NPP.
Others include former Agriculture Minister, Dr Akoto Afriyie and former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, who have all declared their intention to contest.
On February 1, a former MP for the Mampong Constituency, Francis Addai-Nimoh, formally announced his intention to contest too.
