Election 2020: Polls cannot be rigged – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) is assuring the general public that the results of this year’s elections will not be manipulated.

Chairperson of the Commission, Madam Jean Mensa at a press conference Wednesday submitted that the rigorous yet transparent and openly participatory nature of the electoral process renders results insusceptible to rigging.

According to her, beyond involving representatives of all contesting parties in the counting and collation processes, a new development has been introduced to ensure utmost inclusiveness and erase probable ambiguity.

“What we’ve done is to introduce a regional collation centre. Unlike the previous elections where constituency collation results were sent straight to the national collation centre, constituency results are sent to the regional collation centres where we also have the full involvement of the representatives of each political party.

“The regional centre collates results from all the constituencies in that region, and therefore what is found on the regional collation and summary sheets reflects actuality,” she said.

The EC boss said this while urging the general public to dismiss speculations of planned attempts to rig the results of Monday’s Presidential and Parliamentary election exercise.

She admonished Ghanaians to bear faith in the Commission, as the final results will only depict their genuine choices.

“When the results come in from the regions, the party representatives review and verify them against what they have received from their own agents. Once they are happy with it, they append their signatures to it before it is brought to the office of the Chairperson for certification,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Commission has also begun publishing Presidential results from each region even as counting continues at some collation centres in two regions.
