Rainfall accompanied by a heavy storm that hit parts of the Upper East Region on Tuesday night has killed two persons in the Pomolgu-Sirigu community of the Kassena-Nankana West District.
The deceased, a 45-year old watchman at Light House International School at Serigu, Kofi Alawi, and 5-year old girl, Awungba Salamatu, were killed when flying roofing sheets ripped off buildings hit and slashed their throats during the rain.
Apart from claiming the lives of the two, the rainstorm also uprooted trees and electricity poles, ripped the roofing of houses, and pulled down buildings, including public schools.
A government appointee at the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly, Akankele Moses, told this reporter the destruction had caused huge losses to many people in the community.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive of the area, Gerald Ataogye, visited the affected communities on Wednesday, and said officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation would ascertain the extent of damage as soon as possible, for immediate steps to be taken to fix school buildings that had been affected.
Individuals whose properties had also been destroyed were expected to get some relief items from the organisation.
