Genevieve Nnaji’s ‘Lionheart’ is first Netflix original movie from Nigeria
‘Lion Heart’ a Nigerian film directed by ace Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji has been bought by Nextflix making it the first Nigerian movie on the international movie platform.
The movie was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has gathered positive reviews already though it’s not out in the public yet.
The Nollywood screen goddess after placing Nigerian on the world map was invited for an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest on his Tuesday night show.
Toughing on how she financed the movie she said, “For the money, we had to self-fund unfortunately, she says, we don’t have adequate funding for movies that we actually intend to go global, there isn’t that provision yet.”
Genevieve indicated that language barrier is one of the issues that prevents Nollywood movies from going global.
She added that another challenge has been the difficulty in mobilizing funds to make great movies.
She lamented how there are a few bodies set aside to fund Nollywood movies but was hopeful the situation in the Nigerian movie industry would change over time.
