GFA runs to Kofi Boakye for help

After getting itself muddied in the infamous Number 12 exposé of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has run to the head of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) of the Ghana Police Service to ‘help clean the mess.’

COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, also a lawyer, has been mandated by the GFA to adjudicate a bribery scandal involving more than 70 referees and several high-profile football officials, including the erstwhile President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

This follows damning revelations contained in the exposé of ace journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which implicated several football gurus, both locally and internationally.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the GFA, Isaac Addo, said his outfit will not interfere in the work of COP Boakye. The head of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau is also the Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the GFA.

It added: “The conducts of the said officials have been referred to the GFA Ethics Committee, chaired by COP Kofi Boakye, to go through the Judicial Process.”

The statement further added: “The GFA shall not interfere in the works of the Ethics Committee and shall embrace any decision that the Ethics Committee may come out with.”

The statement further asked all officials of the association, who were implicated in the Anas exposé, to step aside from their various positions and stay away from all football activities with immediate effect.

It added: “All officials of the GFA, shown to have allegedly committed various acts of misconduct in the Tiger Eye PI documentary, shall step aside from their positions and steer away from all football-related activities with immediate effect.”

This follows a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association on June 8th, 2018 over the exposé.

The GFA further dissolved the Referees’ Appointment Committee per the statement, and further temporarily put all competitions of the association on hold.

Furthermore, in an attempt to find a ‘middle ground’ with the government over the revelations of the exposé, a five-member team, comprising Messrs Kweku Eyiah (Leader), Benjamin Nab Eyison, Kurt Okraku (Spokesperson), Isaac Addo and Samuel Opoku Nti, has been tasked to meet the government for a resolution of the current impasse, as well as draw up a programme for lasting reforms.

The statement further indicated that “the GFA shall soon come out with a road map for the elections of a substantive President, in accordance with its statutes.”

Apologising unconditionally to the entire nation and all stakeholders, the GFA further pledged to “take all legitimate steps to restore confidence and trust in the beautiful game.”

Meanwhile, the government has issued a statement seeking to restructure the GFA, with the premises of the association now declared a crime scene, by the police.
