NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said that he would lose his seat if he registers for the Ghana Card.
According to him, his constituents may consider that as an act of betrayal as most of them do not have the required documents for registration.
In an interview with Citi FM, he stated that they (the minority) are raising genuine concerns about the registration requirements of the Ghana Card.
He added that the NIA has remained adamant to pressures from the minority and civil society groups to include voters’ ID as proof of citizenship.
He insisted that, he would not register for the Ghana card if the concerns are not addressed.
The Ghana card registration was boycotted by the minority in parliament following a statement by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu stating that the restriction of identification requirements to passports and birth certificates would denationalize about 23 million Ghanaians.
The minority received a boost when Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor also called on the NIA to include voters’ ID as proof of citizenship.
