Ghana-Nigeria clash: Gyan apologises for ‘nonsense’ tweet; insists Ashimeru deserves Black Stars call-up

Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan has apologised to Ghanaians for using unprintable words in calling for the inclusion of Majeed Ashimeru in the men’s national football squad recently named to face their Nigerian counterparts in the upcoming World Cup playoffs.

According to the former Black Stars Captain, he was carried away by his emotions in his earlier reaction.

In a subsequent tweet, Gyan said: “I still insist that Ashimeru deserves to be in this current Black Stars” squad, adding: “But [I] am sorry for using the word ‘nonsense’ in my statement, so, I unreservedly withdraw that word. I was carried by my emotions”.

Gyan earlier condemned the exclusion of the Anderlecht midfielder in a tweet on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

In his view, the Belgian player is the best midfielder in Ghana after Thomas Partey.

He later deleted his emotional tweet.

Twenty-four-year-old Ashimeru has been impressive in the Belgian top-flight since the beginning of the year.

Coach Otto Addo named a 27-man squad for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 playoffs against Nigeria on Tuesday

The Back Stars will take on the Super Eagles in two matches scheduled for Kumasi and Abuja, respectively, as the search for a ticket to November’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar heats up.

Ghana will host the first leg at the Baba Yara Sports stadium on Friday, 25 March 2022 before travelling to Abuja for the second leg on Tuesday, 29 March 2022.
