The ministry of fisheries is set to ban the importation of tilapia as a measure to prevent the outbreak of virus which poses huge risk to tilapia farmers globally.
The virus which has been found in tilapia farms across Africa, Asia and South America is known as Tilapia Lake Virus (TilV).
According to the fisheries ministry, the six-month ban – which becomes effective on Sunday – would affect both live and dead tilapia fish.
There are a few tilapia farms in Ghana, but the farming is done on a small scale.
