General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, says the party does not know who the financiers or sponsors of the party’s Unity Walk are.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia speaking on Joy News on a wide range of issues on Monday, said even though the national executives of the party unanimously endorsed the event, it is yet to identify those sponsoring the event.
“I don’t know who funds the Unity Walk. Even though NEC has sanctioned the event, we don’t know those financing it. I’m sure party members who feel the need to contributing to it do so. But I per say have not been approached to contribute towards it,” Mr Asiedu Nketia said.
Asked whether former president John Mahama is the one bankrolling the programme, he said “that is not true. These assertions are all speculations and there is no iota of truth in that”.
The party which was defeated by the New Patriotic Party, NPP, in the December 2016 polls and has since been rocked by confusion and division as they know not why it lost the elections.
The fact-finding committee led by Professor Kwesi Botchwey as part of its recommendations urged the party to restructure itself and undergo a healing process.
The party in its bid to follow the process, embarked on the Unity Walk session across the country to interact with members.
Continuing, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the Unity Walk since its inception has been embraced by the rank and file of the party, adding that, the party needed that to strengthen the grassroots.
But some flagbearer hopefuls, including Alban Bagbin and Joshua Larbi, have kicked against the event, alleging that it was just organized to project Mr Mahama.
