I’m unwilling to accept ‘fictionalised’ election outcome – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has refused to accept President Akufo-Addo’s election victory.

He described the election results announced by the Electoral Commission (EC) as “fictionalised.”

“I stand before you tonight unwilling to accept the fictionalised result of a flawed election,” Mr. Mahama said at a press conference on Thursday evening.

“What we witnessed across the country from Monday 7th December 2020 exposed a deliberate plan to manipulate and predetermine the results of the election in favour of the incumbent candidate Nana Akufo-Addo,” he added.

The EC announced President Akufo-Addo as the rightful winner of the December 7 polls on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, despite concerns raised by the opposition NDC.

President Akufo-Addo won 6,730,587 (51.302%) of the total votes.

Mr. Mahama came second with 6,213,182 votes representing 47.359%.

But Mr. Mahama insists that his party emerged victorious in the polls after winning nine regions and “no amount of trickery, sleight of hand and obfuscation will erase that reality.”

The NDC has long questioned the credibility of the Electoral Commission and its Chairperson Jean Mensa and Mr. Mahama said the electoral process justified their fears.

“It is now obvious to many objective minds that the Commission and its Chairperson have been used to manipulate results from the various constituencies and in that process seek to subvert the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people.”

The NDC flagbearer also said that the NDC had won the Majority in Parliament though the EC’s figures show the New Patriotic Party leading with 137 MP elects to the NDC’s 136, with one constituency outstanding.

“We will not accept anything short of a declaration of the legitimate results which points to an NDC parliamentary majority,” Mr. Mahama said.

He further praised the NDC MP candidates as being “giant elephant killers.”

Mr. Mahama assured that the NDC’s team of lawyers and senior Party officials will “continue its meticulous audit of all presidential pink sheets to ensure that the verdict of the people is upheld.”

“We will take all legitimate steps to reverse this travesty of justice,” he added.
