GOAL! EGYPT 0-1 URUGUAY (Jimenez, 89)

DRAMA! THEY’VE STOLEN IT AT THE DEATH!

Sanchez sends a free-kick from the right wing and the Atletico Madrid centre-back rises like a salmon. He still has plenty to do but directs his header straight into the top corner. Stunning header.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

88: POST!! So unlucky. Cavani smacks an effort from the free-kick that looks in all the way…but comes flashing back off the post. Sanchez is waiting for the rebound but his effort rebounds back off his own player.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

83: WHAT A SAVE! Elshenawy could have just become the new Egyptian King. Suarez nods down a ball to Cavani who strikes a first-time volley that is heading for the net. The goalkeeper flings himself across and makes a brilliant one-handed save.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

82: CLOSE! Elneny wriggles free in the box and he tries to reverse a clever chipped effort into the far corner. Wrong club – just a little bit too much juice. It sails over the crossbar.

SUB! Final sub. Sobhi replaces Wanda. We won’t be seeing Salah today.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

80: Still no pressure from Uruguay – if anything it’s Egypt doing all the pressing now.Kahraba finds space to run into down the left but his final ball across goal is cleared away. That’s where they could do with Salah’s quality.

77: Godin intercepts the play and drives forward. He continues his run down the channel but Sanchez plays a terrible pass straight out of play. The skipper is fuming.

74: CHANCE! Suarez just isn’t at it for whatever reason. Brilliant ball by Cavani sends him in behind. He waits, waits, waits for the goalkeeper to go down but he doesn’t and ends up allowing Elshenawy to smother ball. Very poor from the striker.

73: SHOT! Switch of play from Egypt – Wanda dummies it for Fathy on the overlap who fancies his chances from 25 yards. He catches the strike with plenty of power but it flashes straight at Muslera.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

69: Sanchez tries to get going down the right flank and wins a corner – up come the big lads from the back.

The corner is poor but Cavani makes the most of it. He turns, shoots but it hits Caceres on the arm. Free-kick Egypt, who clear their lines.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

64: SUB! Mohsen off. Kahraba replaces him – he’ll bring more pace up top. Salah looks on still.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

47: SAVE! Cavani and Suarez show their class. The PSG man lifts the ball over the top for Suarez, who races through. The angle is tight but he connects well from 12 yards. Elshenawy stays big and blocks the ball away. Good goalkeeping.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

46: We are back! Egypt get the match going – Salah – still – watches on from the bench….

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

HT: Uruguay have not met pre-tournament expectations here. There is not a lot between these two on this showing – Egypt are very organised through the centre which is frustrating Suarez. He missed the best chance when firing into the side netting from a tight angle.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

45: One minute added on.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

31: Suarez tries to turn but loses possession – not for the first time. He looks very sluggish – and he knows it, to the extent where you can see him literally having a word with himself.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

29: Hamed is doing a mighty destructive job in the centre. Suarez has been robbed a few times by the nippy midfielder.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

24: CHANCE! Godin wins the flick at the near post corner and it rolls all the way to Suarez at the back post. He’s only six yards out. He slides one towards goal but hooks it into the side netting. Big opportunity missed – Suarez can’t believe he’s not hit the target.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

23: SHOT! Better tempo from Uruguay – a corner is cleared and it drops to Cavani who flicks one over the defender’s head. He smacks one from 22 yards and it’s travelling….but it’s headed over the crossbar. Unlucky.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

20: Uruguay are finding the red wall hard to break down here. Suarez drops deep and tries to link with Cavani but it’s snuffed out. Lots of sideways passing without much spark.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

17: Good spell of territory for Egypt. Warda is seeing plenty of the ball – he’s very Salah-like in appearance but has yet show the same level of silk as the Liverpool man.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

17: Good spell of territory for Egypt. Warda is seeing plenty of the ball – he’s very Salah-like in appearance but has yet show the same level of silk as the Liverpool man.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

14: SHOT! Suarez at the heart of this move. He plays it out to Varela who gives it back to him about 18 yards out. He tries a first-time strike but it bobbles off the turf and a few yards wide. Not his best.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

12: SHOT! Egypt aren’t frightened to push players on. Eleney flicks the ball into the box and it drops to Trezeguet on the half-turn. He hits a low effort that is straight at Muslera.

NOT QUITE FULL

A few empty seats in view of the cameras here, but a decent atmosphere. The Egyptian fans are whistling every time Uruguay get the ball.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

9: SHOT! Cavani again moves out to the left and receives the play. He comes inside and pulls the trigger from 20 yards. It’s low and pretty tame. Easy for Elshenawy.

EGYPT 0-0 URUGUAY

Egypt v Uruguay

The anthems conducted, it’s now time for football. Mohamed Salah stands proud for the Egyptian anthem – let’s hope we see him later, although both Gimenez and Godin won’t give him an easy ride.

HERE COME THE TEAMS!

Egypt have never won a World Cup game – can they shock Uruguay?

The teams are out at the Yekaterinburg Arena – it’s a full house! Time for the anthems.

Uruguay qualified automatically from the competitive South American section – avoiding the play-offs for the first time since 1998. Although as robust-as-ever, Uruguay have found a nice blend of ball playing midfielders over the past few seasons which has made them easier on the eye. The service into Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez should provide the pair with plenty of opportunities.

Those two have scored 93 goals between them for their country.

Egypt come into the tournament as Africa’s most successful side – winning seven African Nations cups. However, they haven’t as yet transformed that form to the World Cup – this is their first appearance at the tournament for 28 years.

They sauntered through a qualifying group of Ghana, Uganda and Congo to get here – although their defensive style has drawn criticism from the locals.

Egypt’s brief World Cup history

This is Egypt’s first World Cup game since their 1-0 defeat by England in 1990.

They have only played four World Cup matches – across two tournaments – winning none.

In 1934, they went out to Hungary in the first round – and in 1990 drew against the Netherlands and Republic of Ireland before losing to England to exit at the group stage.

World Cup veteran

This is Oscar Tabarez’s fourth World Cup appearance as a head coach, more than any other coach at this year’s tournament.

They have all been as Uruguay boss, across two spells, in 1990, 2010, 2014 and 2018.

10 minutes to go!!!

‘Salah could become the top goalscorer’

Salah has not played since injuring shoulder ligaments during Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid on 26 May. The indication during Egypt’s press conference yesterday was that he was pretty much certain to play some part in today’s game. So as Laura suggested below, could he be an impact sub?

“I can almost assure you 100% he will play, save unforeseen circumstances at the very last minute,” said Egypt coach Hector Cuper yesterday.

“He could become the top goalscorer here and one of the greatest players.

“We’re trying to make him feel confident. The doctors are giving him the option to play or not, but I know Salah very well and I’m sure he’s not afraid, he’s not fearful.”

Dynamic duo

Egypt v Uruguay

Uruguay’s forward pairing of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have 93 international goals between them – 51 for Barcelona’s Suarez and 42 for PSG’s Cavani.

Salah does not start

Egypt XI: El-Shenawy; Fathy, Gabr, Hegazi, Shafy; Elneny, Hamed; Warda, El Said, Trezeguet; Mohsen.

Suarez and Cavani lead Uruguay challenge

If it is, then his chance starts today. No major surprises in Uruguay’s starting line-up – it’s Suarez and Edinson Cavani up front, as you would expect; Diego Godin provides the defensive stability. Lucas Torreira, in talks over a move to Arsenal from Sampdoria, is a substitute.

Uruguay XI: Muslera; Varela, Gimenez, Godin, Caceres; Nandez, Betancur, Vecino, De Arrascaeta; Cavani, Suarez.

Lineups:
