LIVE UPDATE: England 2 vs 1 Tunisia

TUNISIA 1-2 ENGLAND

FT: That’s it!

Huge relief for England, who gave a decent account of themselves and almost had only a point to show for it!

It was extremely laboured at times in the second half, but England have won their opening World Cup match for only the third time since 1982.

TUNISIA 1-2 ENGLAND

90+4: Good work from Henderson twice in the defensive third and England have a goal kick! Tunisia will feel sick, but England fans are going wild.

TUNISIA 1-2 ENGLAND

90+3: Final change for England, Dier is on for Lingard for the final minute!

GOAL! TUNISIA 1-2 ENGLAND (Kane 90+1)

ENGLAND HAVE DONE IT! AND IT’S KANE AGAIN!

He’s not taking the corners at this competition, instead he’s getting on the end of them.

Trippier’s corner is flicked on brilliantly by Maguire, and Kane is unmarked at the far post to nod in from a couple yards out!!

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

89: CHANCE! Head in hands for Rashford and England. Trippier slips in Loftus-Cheek on the right, and his cut-back is plum for Rashford.

He must have heard a shout from his United team-mate Lingard, because he’s left it, and Lingard is snuffed out!

Rashford holds his hands up as if to say: “What?!”

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

88: Good burst from Loftus-Cheek through the Tunisia defence, but his cross is deflected and then cleared.

Inspiration needed from somewhere here.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

87: England camped in the Tunisia half. Trippier’s free-kick is cleared, but the red shirts build again across the pitch. Surely, one last chance?

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

85: Change for Tunisia, their final change. Wahbi Khazri comes off, to be replaced by Khalifa.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

83: Rashford is on the run, and wins a corner for England at the byline.

Young goes over to take, it’s decent, and Ben Mustapha punches clear ahead of Stones! The referee has, for some reason, given Tunisia a free-kick, but Stones did nothing wrong!

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

82: Tunisia winning a few of the individual battles, but it’s all in their defensive third. England will surely pile a couple more men beyond halfway for the final 10 minutes.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

80: Dele Alli makes way, and will be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Was Alli injured throughout the second half? He hasn’t looked with it at all.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

79: Young steps up, looks to dink it top corner, but it’s half a yard over the bar! A huge groan heard from the England fans inside the Volgograd Arena.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

78: Free-kick to England on the edge of the box! Alli does well with a nice one-two with Kane, before defender Ben Yousseff completely takes him out!

Ashley Young over this, just outside the D.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

77: England go up a gear as Kane taps back Trippier’s cross at the far post, but it’s cleared just as Lingard arrived.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

76: England with all of the ball, but Tunisia are happy with this at the moment. The Tunisians easily revert back to their formation, and it’s all in front of them at the minute. Can Rashford help get them in-behind?

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

74: Change for Tunisia. Sliti, who has had a good day, is replaced by Ben Amor, a more defensively-minded midfielder.

An indication of what Tunisia are trying to do for the last 15-20 minutes.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

73: Khazri on the run behind the England defence, but instead of waiting for his team-mates he has a go from the angle! Stones blocks well.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

71: England nearly slip in-behind, with Henderson’s chipped ball almost finding Alli, but the flag had gone up for offside anyhow.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

69: Trippier steps up… decent effort, but it’s a yard or so wide of Ben Mustapha’s goal!

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

68: England win a free-kick in striking distance as Meriah steps on Kane.

First England change, Raheem Sterling off, Rashford on. I’d have thought Alli would be coming off…

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

PIC: England corners have resembled Royal Rumbles at times this evening, but the Colombian official has been reluctant to punish any Tunisian grappling.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

68: The momentum isn’t in the match at the moment. And what happens when that’s the case?

= Mexican Wave.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

66: Sterling and Kane were routinely dropping deep in the first half, but they’re hanging on the last defenders now, waiting for, well, nothing. Tunisia are so deep that any ball over the top will be swept up.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

64: Henderson looking long more and more now. His latest ball for Lingard goes out of play.

England looking a bit flat now. When will Southgate change it up?

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

62: Henderson with a superb diagonal to Trippier on the right, and his cross on the stretch is deflected for a corner.

Trippier takes, Stones gets to it, Kane just keeps it in but Tunisia clear. Nobody falls over in the box after wrestling that time…

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

60: England build on the left, where there are red shirts galore. Kane taps it into Sterling inside the box, he’s met by a wall of white Tunisian shirts, and panics. Tunisia come away, but England win it back and come forward again…

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

58: Trippier has been the best player on the pitch so far. With supreme confidence, he nods a long diagonal back to Pickford under pressure.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

56: Alli isn’t moving at 100 per cent, but he’s still on the pitch. Delph was warming up earlier, but no sign of the Man City man as yet.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

54: Fascinating game. It looks like the ball is there to be won with every Tunisia pass, and England are pressing extremely hard.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

52: SAVE! Trippier takes the corner, Maguire gets up well, but Ben Mustapha saves comfortably to his right!

Once again, eyes are on the wrestling in the box. Kane and Ben Yousseff are at it again, but this time it looks as though Kane is cheekily holding the Tunisians arm against his own neck!

Nothing given, and rightly so.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

51: Sterling shows great pace to find some space as Tunisia chase back, before Meriah’s heavy backpass to Ben Mustapha goes out for a corner.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

49. Very low key and bitty in the second half so far. Possession being exchanged, but Henderson knocks the ball out of play under little pressure.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

47: Just into the second half and you can detect far more confidence from the Tunisians. They’ve had the ball for two minutes now.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

46: Dele Alli still on the pitch, and we’re back under way in Volgograd.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

45+3: That’s the half.

Harry Kane got his first World Cup goal, and it looked like England’s game to run away with. But Sassi’s penalty, given away by Walker, levelled things up.

England were so exciting for the vast majority of the half, but Tunisia must shore things up second half? England should be a couple goals clear here.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

45+1: Three minutes added on. Dele Alli is still on the pitch… he will surely be assessed at the break.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

44: OFF THE POST! Chance after chance after chance for England!!

Trippier, who has been superb, finds the running Lingard behind the defence. The goalkeeper rushes out, Lingard taps it over Ben Mustapha, but his finish from an angle hits the outside of the post and wide! It loooked as though Ben Yousseff would have covered on the line anyhow.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

42: CHANCE! Another chance, and it’s come from yet another set piece. Trippier curls one in, Henderson nods it on, Maguire heads it back across goal, and it falls to Lingard.

On the volley, 10 yards out, but he almost slices it, and it luckily deflects off Bronn for a corner!

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

40: The referee briefly went to VAR just then. Kane is being wrestled to the floor inside the area by goalscorer Sassi, but nothing is given! Bizarre.

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

39: WHAT A CHANCE! Dear oh dear. England should score here. England free-kick on the left, Alli knocks the ball back across goal, Tunisia clear it from under the crossbar, but it falls to John Stones!

He’s in acres of space, eight yards out, but absolutely fluffs his left-footed effort!!

TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND

37: Sheesh. Maguire gives the ball away in England’s defence third again, but Khazri’s ball left to Sliti is weak and Walker thankfully dispossesses.

INJURY! Another blog for England. Dele Alli is just not moving as he was earlier in this game. Delph is warming up and may be coming on here…

GOAL! TUNISIA 1-1 ENGLAND (Sassi pen 35)

Tunisia level! It’s against the run of play, to say the least.

Fine penalty, bottom left, with Pickford guessing correctly and even getting a fingertip to it!

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

33: PENALTY TO TUNISIA!!!

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

33: England win the ball back instantly, and knock it about with confidence at the back. But Sterling and Kane need to drop a bit to add to the numbers in midfield.

Alli has it on the right, crosses, but Ben Yousseff clears it. Dele Alli holding his thigh worringly now…

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

31: Free-kick England on the left, a good crossing position.

SAVE! Trippier is over it, lofted to the back post to Maguire, who out-muscles his man as he gets to the header. It’s a powerful header, and Ben Mustapha has to dive to collect it!

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

29: Very dangerous corner from Khazri, but Maguire makes amends with a superb header. Pickford was rooted to his line as Tunisia came steaming into the six-yard box.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

28: Warning for England! Maguire messes up on the right, allowing Ben Youssef to take over. His square pass is snuffed out by Walker, but he then makes a hash of his clearance!

Maguire then gets a touch on Khazri’s effort. Corner to Tunisia!

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

27: England with 61 per cent of the ball so far, and seven attempts on goal to Tunisia’s one. It’s a superb start, but you feel they need another goal.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

25: The corner comes to nothing, and England build.

CHANCE! What a ball by Ashley Young from the left, cutting onto his right. England are queuing up at the far post, but it’s Lingard who latches, only for his effort to hit the floor and go wide!

He should be making better connection there.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

21: Alli tries to play a nice one-two with Kane, but it’s just thwarted.

Give-and-go all the time for England here. Very impressive (so far).

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

18: Another fine England move. Walker finds Trippier behind the defence on the right, he cuts it back for Kane, but it’s inches away from him!

Henderson then has a go from range, but Ben Mustapha is behind it for his first action.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

16: Tunisia now noticeably pressing England’s back three. It’s important England pick up the rhythm again.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

14: Goalkeeper Hassen has had a very busy evening so far, and now he’s in tears because he’s being brought off on just his fourth appearance.

He was injured from early on, and Ben Mustapha comes on.

TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND

13: Just before England scored, I was going to praise Harry Maguire. He ignored the sideways pass and looked forward for Kane, 20 yards up the field to his feet.

Kane played a nice one-two with Alli, before his shot was deflected for the corner from which England scored.

Well done the two Harrys.

GOAL! TUNISIA 0-1 ENGLAND (Kane 11)

Off and running, and it’s captain Kane!

Young curls in a corner, Stones rises highest and bullets a header goalwards, but Hassen keeps it out quite superbly.

Unfortunately for him it’s straight to Kane, and he doesn’t miss from there. With Hassen grounded, he taps it home from close range!

Lift off for England!

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

10: Ah, welcome to the game Tunisia! They knock the ball about midfield, before Sassi’s long ball to Bronn is out of play. Waste.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

9: Ashley Young is getting a talking to here. His elbow has inadvertently caught Khazri, who is down and hurt.

He gets up, VAR doesn’t look at it, and the ref gives him a word. Lucky? Perhaps fair. It looked accidental.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

8: England passing the ball out from the back nicely, through the compartments. They’re taking a few risks, which may not be a bad thing. Maguire on the ball a lot early on.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

6: Breathless start!

Goalkeeper Hassen is down with an injury, gets lengthy treatment, but looks just OK to continue.

Southgate will be delighted with the way England have started.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

5: OFFSIDE! The flag comes to the rescue for Sterling because he’s missed an absolute sitter here.

More lovely play from England as Alli slips in Lingard down the left, he squares to the back post for Sterling with a near-open goal, but he can’t get his feet right and it goes wide!

Luckily, the flag was up for an offside on Lingard. Just.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

4: SAVE! Huge early chance for England! Henderson plays a lovely ball over the top for Alli, his early cross is swept clear, but Bronn makes a hash of his clearance as Alli pinches it and it’s straight to Lingard!

He’s eight yards out, the ball falls to him so kindly, but his low effort is superbly poked wide by the foot of Hassen!

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

3: Not the greatest first touch for Harry Kane, with Tunisians surrounding him, but goalkeeper Hassen then punts it out of play for a throw under now pressure. England regain possession.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

2: England knock the ball about the back comfortably, before Trippier’s ball for the running Lingard is over-hit down the right flank.

TUNISIA 0-0 ENGLAND

1: And they’re off!

CARD HAPPY?

A little side note… Colombian Wilmar Roldan has shown EIGHT reds in the last 11 club games he has taken charge of.

Don’t show your studs, chaps.

THE ANTHEMS

Tunisia’s up-beat anthem passes. Plenty of Tunisians in the stadium, and now for God Save the Queen.

NINE England players singing this for the first time as a starter at the World Cup. We’re nearly ready…
