World Cup

FT: France 1 vs 0 Peru

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

It’s all over in Yekaterinburg, and France are through to the last 16 with two wins from two, while Peru will exit the competition at the group stage after their final game against Australia next week.

Kylian Mbappe’s first World Cup goal seals another unconvincing win for France, and Peru will rue a number of missed chances, particularly in the second half.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

90+3: A late free kick for Peru and everyone is up, urged on by their bench, but Guerrero can only head the delivery wide.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

90+2: A flash of an effort from Matuidi after Peru cleared a France free kick, but it goes well wide of the post.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

90: Four minutes added on at the end of the second half.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

89: A final change for France as Pogba makes way for Nzonzi.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

87: Guerrero takes and it’s not a bad effort – it’s on target – but Lloris reads it well and gets down low to save.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

86: Free kick for Peru and a yellow card for Pogba after a foul on Farfan, catching the Peru attacker in the face.

It’s around 30 yards out and dead centre. Can they force a late equaliser?

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

83: Free kick for Peru as Pogba fouls Carrillo, but they cannot make too much from it.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

82: A snapshot effort from Dembele – France’s first real chance of the half – but it flashes wide of the post.

Meanwhile, a final change for Peru with Cueva making way for Diaz.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

81: A yellow card for Aquino now after a case of mistaken identity. The referee had shown it to Flores initially, but was told of his mistake and eventually booked the right person.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

79: Another France change now as Fakir comes on for Griezmann.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

78: Free kick to France as Pogba is brought down by Carrillo in the middle of the park.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

75: Here comes the first France change as Mbappe comes off and is replaced by Dembele.

The former takes an age to leave the field, shaking hands with his team-mates and then the opposition players he passes before finally leaving the field.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

74: CHANCE!! Another superb chance for Peru but they cannot make it count.

They break down the field and it’s Carrillo again who delivers the cross, although he just over hits it, with Farfan at the back post only able to knock it into the side of the net.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

71: Just under 20 minutes to go in Yeketerinburg, and Peru have had their chances to score. A few more should come their way before full-time but France need to be making some changes around about now, you feel.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

68: SHOT!! Again from Peru, who are finding plenty of ways to shoot from range. Advincula strikes this time from just outside the area, but it just curls over the crossbar.

One of those have to go in eventually, right?…

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

66: Another good cross into the area by Carrillo, who is really the driving force for Peru at the moment, but Umtiti is there again to cut out the danger.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

64: France are finding their feet again in this one with a spell on the ball. Peru have had the best chances so far this half.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

61: Great play from Peru as Advincula is slipped in down the right of the area and he gets his cross in, but Umtiti is waiting in the middle to head the ball away.

Some real pressure from Peru at the moment as Carrillo strikes from range, but his 20-yard effort whistles over the crossbar!

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

59: A lovely run from Carrillo down the right flank, and he whips a great cross into the area but Guerrero cannot latch onto the end of it.

Carrillo is then in the middle of the action again as he goes over during a tussle with Matuidi. The Peru fans are calling for a free kick, but the referee signals that the Peru man dived. Replays showed minimal contact so a good call from the officials.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

57: Some lovely skill from Mbappe there as he rounds Aquino before putting a cross into the area. Matiudi shoots but he doesn’t catch the ball well and it goes into the side of the net.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

56: A good corner from Mbappe there and Umtiti nearly gets his head onto the end of it, but he is up against Gallese as the ball is cleared by a gaggle of Peru heads.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

55: Another tackle on Hernandez – this time from Carrillo – gives France another free kick. Pogba takes it short to Hernandez as France look to pass their way into the area.

Bit of a waste of a chance there, I think.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

54: Just before the kick is taken, Mbappe trots over to the ball, but it is Griezmann who takes it but it goes a bit too high for anyone to make a connection before Peru clear.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

52: Free kick for France in a decent position, over on the left after a foul from Guerrero on Hernandez. Griezmann is over it…

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

51: OFF THE BAR!!!! What a thunderous effort from Aquino!

The ball is played off to him by Farfan and Aquino hits a brilliant effort from around 25 yards out, and it pings off the top left corner of the crossbar before going wide!

Lloris would have had no chance with that. What a hit.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

49: It looks like Umtiti will try and run the injury off as he limps towards the touchline. The play is back under way.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

48: Umtiti is writhing around on the floor after going up against Farfan in a challenge, clutching the top of his thigh. It looks like he took a knee to the leg in that one.

The stretcher is on…

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

47: Some good work from Advincula early on as he goes up against Matuidi on the left, getting the ball away from the Frenchman before winning Peru a free kick.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

46: Peru get the second half under way in Yekaterinburg.

They’ve made a few changes at the break too with Farfan and Santamaria replacing Rodriguez and Yotun.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

An entertaining first half in Yekaterinburg, and it’s Kylian Mbappe’s first World Cup goal that sees France ahead and, as it stands, into the last 16 of the competition.

Peru have not sat back though, and Paulo Guerrero has forced a fine save from Hugo Lloris, although Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese has certainly been the busier of the two.

A finely poised match, and the second half will surely not disappoint!

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

45: Two minutes added on at the end of the first half.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

44: SAVE!! Another superb save from Gallese as Hernandez collects a knocked through pass from Griezmann across the top of the area.

Hernandez strikes but sees his effort strongly saved by Gallese before Giroud unwittingly plays the ball back into his team-mate’s path with his chest. Hernandez strikes a second time, but it flashes past the upright this time.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

42: France are probing once again as they look for a second goal before the break, but Peru are doing well to keep them at bay so far.

FRANCE 1-0 PERU

39: Some good defending from Pavard as he stops Carrillo in his tracks before France burst down the field with Mbappe on the right wing, tapping a cross in for Griezmann who in turn tries to pick out Giroud.

However, there is far too much space, and it allows Gallese to come off his line and pounce onto the loose ball.

DID YOU KNOW?…

Mbappe has become France’s youngest ever goalscorer at a World Cup or European Championships, which was previously held by David Trezeguet (vs Saudi Arabia in 1998 at 20y 246d).

GOAL! FRANCE 1-0 PERU (Mbappe, 34)

There’s no denying him a second time as Mbappe makes the breakthrough!!

Giroud’s cross through the box from the left-hand side takes a wicked deflection off the legs of Rodriguez, and the loose pass lands to the feet of Mbappe in the six-yard box, and he makes no mistake in poking home.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

33: SAVE!!! At the other end this time! Pogba plays a sublime ball over the top, taking out a big chunk of the Peru defence, and Mbappe latches onto the pass.

However, he attempts to backheel it home and cannot see the goal, with Gallese making a scrambled save to deny him.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

31: SAVE!! A big chance for Peru but centurion Lloris comes to France’s aid.

Cueva is slipped in down the left flank with relatively ease before he cuts the ball back into the area. The ball is begging for someone to get onto the end of it and Guerrero obliges.

He takes the ball around Umtiti before firing, but Lloris gets down low to make the save.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

29: A break in play now as Mbappe is down on the floor after a touch from Trauco.

He is, of course, fine to continue though.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

26: Some poor play from Mbappe as he gives to ball away to Aquino in the middle of the park, handing Peru the possession, although they don’t manage to venture too far forward.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

24: France clear Peru’s first corner with relative ease before Advincula lays the ball off to Flores around 25 yards out. He decides to go for goal but hit well wide with a weak effort.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

22: Peru are seeing the better of the possession now after a flurry of action for France. A finely poised game, this one.

However, France do win the free kick as Guerrero catches Umtiti in the face with an arm. The Peru captain then goes into the book, presumably for dissent, after a bit of a conversation with the France defender.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

20: Yotun delivers a great ball, but the referee almost instantly blows for a foul as Rodriguez fouls Umtiti in the area.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

19: Free kick to Peru as Havard is penalised for a handball after blocking a cross from Trauco. Didn’t seem to be too much intention in it but what a chance for Peru, with the set piece on the left flank…

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

17: SAVE! Great anticipation from Gallese as Giroud nods the ball down into the path of Griezmann, who whips the ball towards goal at the first time of asking, but it is straight into the legs of the Peru goalkeeper who makes a good save.

Matuidi is then the first into the book for a foul on Advincula.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

16: NO PENALTY! Fantastic work from Giroud – France are really starting to find their rhythm now – as he flicks the ball back for Mbappe but he goes down in a tumble of legs in the area. They’re both appealing for a penalty, but the referee gives nothing – not even a VAR review.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

15: CLOSE!! After a duff first effort, France have another corner straight after, which Griezmann delivers, and Varane gets up high to nod towards goal, but sends it just skimming past the upright.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

13: Good defending from Cueva – who will be looking to exercise a few demons from the opening game after his skied penalty – as he cuts out a nice, slid pass from Pogba as Hernandez looks to get onto it on the overlap. Not quite though, but France do have a corner.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

12: EFFORT! Nearly a superb opener from Pogba as he lets fly from around 25 yards out, hammering the ball across the face of goal. It has Gallese stretching but goes just wide.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

11: SHOT! Good play from Giroud as he looks to slip in Griezmann down the right of the box. The ball takes a nick off the legs of Aquino on the way through, putting it firmly at the feet of the Atletico Madrid striker, but he eventually effort only finds the side of the net.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

9: Free kick for Peru as Havard bundles into Guerrero, which leads to a brilliant move from Carrillo down the right flank, but his cross into the area cannot be converted.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

7: SHOT! Not a bad effort at all from Flores as he tries to catch Lloris off his line with an ambitious effort from just inside the France area, but it eventually skims over the crossbar.

It had Lloris guessing right up until the last minute, though.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

5: Peru are still in the ascendancy in these early exchanges, and are showing the same gusto and passion that won them many more fans when they played Denmark.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

3: A good start from Peru as Carillo causes plenty of issues down the right flank, getting away from a number of blue shirts before play is stopped with Carillo knocked to the floor.

FRANCE 0-0 PERU

1: Here we go ladies and gents, France get us under way in Yekaterinburg.
