World Cup

FT: Sweden 1 v 0 Switzerland

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

There we have it, a fairly dull game until the second half added time, and it’s Emil Forsberg’s deflected goal that seals Sweden’s spot in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.

Switzerland had their chance to press but their finishing was poor, and they have been punished. Home time for Shaqiri and co.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

90+6: Toivonen delivers and it’s a wonderful effort!! It forces a superb save from Sommer before the full-time whistle goes and Sweden are through to the World Cup quarter-finals!

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

90+5: Free kick to Sweden and no penalty!! The foul correctly came outside the penalty area, and the set-piece is pulled back.

Lang is still sent off, and Sweden are more than likely to win now with this advantage.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

90+2: SAVE!! What a chance and what a save!!

Olsen hasn’t had much to do this half but does really well when called upon. Seferovic gets his head onto a whipped cross from Rodriguez, but the Sweden goalkeeper gets down low to make a solid save.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

90+3: PENALTY SWEDEN AND RED CARD LANG! Olsson races through on goal, bursting down the field, but is pushed by Lang and the Switzerland man is given his marching orders.

There’s all sorts of confusion as the decisions go to VAR with Lang already making his way off the field. The penalty could be changed to a free kick here…

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

90: A late change for Sweden as Berg is replaced by Thelin.

Meanwhile, there will be three minutes of added time.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

89: Not a bad ball from Xhaka as he looks to pick out Rodriguez over on the left flank, but Claesson gets there ahead of the Switzerland full-back before the ball goes out for a throw-in.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

86: A tricky bit of defending from Augustinsson there as Rodriguez tricks and turns his way into a crossover on the left flank, but there are no other red shirts to turn it home as the Sweden man puts it behind with his chest.

Shaqiri delivers the corner, but Sweden manage to clear initially before Rodriguez tries his luck from the top of the box but it does not make it through.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

83: Some great defending from Lindelof as Embolo breezes into the area and looks to get his shot away, but the Sweden defender is there to get a leg in front of him and see the ball away.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

81: Another Shaqiri ball is put into the area, and again it is inviting, but it lashes over the head of Drmic before going wide.

A double change for Sweden too as Forsberg and Lustig make way for Olsson and Krafth.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

80: CLOSE!! Shaqiri delivers the corner and it is nearly scrambled home!

Embolo nods it towards goal, but goalscorer Forsberg is there to get a knee onto the ball before Granqvist properly pumps the ball out of the box.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

79: Switzerland are pushing now for the equaliser, as you would expect.

Rodriguez puts another great ball into the area that Djourou looks to get his head onto, but it just goes past him before the Swiss are awarded a corner.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

78: A great run from Embolo who gets away from Lustig down the left flank, nutmegging him in the process, but the Sweden defender does well to block his attempted cross for a corner.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

76: NO PENALTY! A few half-hearted penalty calls for Sweden as Claesson is fouled in the area by Behrami, but the referee waves away the claims.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

75: Some good work from Rodriguez wins a corner for the Swiss, but his delivery is headed away by Lustig before Shaqiri pumps the ball back into the area, but Akanji cannot get there in time as the ball runs wide.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

73: Double chance for Switzerland now as Seferovic and Embolo come on for Dzemaili and Zuber.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

72: Rodriguez delivers the free kick but Lindelof nods it away, but the loose ball lands to Shaqiri who tries to curl one home, but it just goes wide of the post.

Switzerland then have a few corners in succession, but Shaqiri’s first delivery is headed away by Lindelof before Sweden clear Rodriguez’s second attempt.

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

70: Free kick for the Swiss as Berg catches the foot of Akanji. A chance for Switzerland to deliver into the box here…

SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND

68: Not long after the goal and Xhaka is booked for a foul on Claesson. His first of the tournament, in fact.

I was shocked too!

GOAL! SWEDEN 1-0 SWITZERLAND (Forsberg, 66)

FINALLY! There’s a breakthrough and hopefully it inspires a bit of quality in this now!

Toivonen slips the ball to Forsberg across the top of the area who takes a few strides before striking – but the ball takes a big deflection off the foot of Akanji on the way through and beats Sommer in the net.

A cruel blow for Switzerland but they have plenty of time to get back into this yet.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

65: Free kick to Switzerland now as Behrami is the man to be fouled, going up against Berg. Shaqiri tries to take it quickly before the referee pulls it back for not being in the right place, before the free kick is taken short.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

64: Forsberg delivers but it hammers into the body of Shaqiri in the wall before Forsberg tries to play a cross into the area but ends up giving away a goal kick after a tussle with Dzemaili.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

63: Free kick for Sweden as Behrami is bamboozled by Forsberg at the top left corner of the box. Forsberg over it…

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

61: Another booking, this time for Behrami, as he fouls Forsberg. He will also miss the quarter-final should Switzerland qualify.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

60: Just poor play from Sweden. Forsberg does well to get forward, before finding Ekdal at the top of the area.

He looks like he’s about to shoot but doesn’t, instead passes to Claesson who then lays it off to Lustig who strikes, but it goes well, well wide of the target.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

58: Not too much happening in the last few minutes, and Sweden have just passed the ball all the way back to their own goalkeeper.

Someone has told them it’s a World Cup knockout game, right?…

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

55: A break in play briefly as Ekdal goes down and looks to be in a bit of pain. However, he is soon back on his feet before Lang takes a Switzerland throw.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

53: A quick corner for Switzerland who have a few set-pieces in a row, but Shaqiri’s cross into the area from the wing is well saved by Olsen.

A bit of pressure from the Swiss at the moment, can they make it count?

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

50: A half-chance for Shaqiri towards the back post, but the ball came off him before being cleared by Svensson.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

49: MISS!! Some superb work from Forsberg, who has to navigate around the referee before bursting forward, before picking out Augustinsson on the left-hand side.

His cross into the area cannot be headed towards goal by Claesson – who tries to nod it home – before Toivonen lets fly from just inside the area but it fires over the crossbar.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

47: Early free kick for Sweden as Xhaka is penalised for a handball. Didn’t look to be much in it for me, though.

Augustinsson takes but Switzerland manage to clear fairly easily.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

46: Switzerland get us back under way in St Petersburg. No changes from the managers at half-time.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

Chances for both sides in that first half, but there has been some terrible finishing plus a good save from Yann Sommer to keep Marcus Berg from netting the opening goal.

As expected before the game, it has been tight between the two and this game is there for the taking. We have to have a winner this afternoon!

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

45: Late first-half free-kick as Rodriguez is fouled by Lustig. Shaqiri lofts the ball towards the back post but Olsen reads well and collects.

There will be one minute of added time.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

44: CLOSE! Another good cross into the area, this time from Shaqiri on the left flank, but it evades all the other red shirts in the area before Sweden manage to clear.

Terrible finishing on display so far.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

41: MISS!! Another, this time for Sweden!!

Lustig puts a great ball into the box and it lofts over a number of heads before Ekdal comes steaming in at the back post – unmarked – but he goes for power over precision and his effort fires across the face of goal and into row Z.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

39: Free kick for Sweden as Berg is fouled by Djourou, with Forsberg over the free kick.

He delivers well, but it pings off the head of Dzemaili in the wall and just skims past the post. It wasn’t far away from being an own goal!

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

38: MISS!! How has he missed that?!

The best chance s far from Switzerland as Zubar and Dzemaili link up down the left of the box, playing a neat one-two, before the latter shoots in a great position but he sends his effort high over the crossbar.

He has his head in his hands and he knows he should be scoring that.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

36: First corner of the game comes for Switzerland as Rodriguez delivers, but Sweden manage to clear although only as far as Shaqiri on the edge of the area.

He strikes, but Lustig gets his body in the way to block the effort.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

35: A free kick for Sweden is delivered by Ekdal, which Granqvist gets his head onto at the back post, but it isn’t able to be turned home by another yellow shirt.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

34: WIDE! Not a bad hit from Xhaka at all there as he lets fly from a good 40 yards out, but it just goes over the crossbar.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

31: Rodriguez has tried to be clever there and go around the near side of the ball. He gets it around but Olsen reads it well and makes an easy collection.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

30: First booking of the game for Lustig as he fouls Drmic, and he will miss the quarter final if Sweden make it through.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

29: SAVE!! A wonderful save from Sommer!

Augustinsson puts a great ball into the area that is initially poked away by Rodriguez, but  Claesson comes steaming in to flick the ball into the path of Berg.

The striker then goes for goal, but it forces a superb fingertip save from Sommer who keeps the ball out.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

26: CLEARANCE! A great clearance from Lustig as Lang knocks in an inviting ball into the area, but the Sweden defender is there ahead of Zuber to see the ball away.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

24: CLOSE! Again for Switzerland!

That man Shaqiri is pumping bulls into the area, and it’s another great delivery but Zuber can only direct his effort over the crossbar.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

23: Free kick for Sweden as Behrami beings down Forsberg just inside the Switzerland half. Granqvist lofts it forward and Berg almost connects but Sommer comes out to collect.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

21: Another good ball forward, this time for Shaqiri as he aims for Dzemaili but he has two Sweden defenders around him as the ball runs long.

Some good vision from Switzerland so far, but just lacking some final product.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

19: Good clearance from Lindelof as Rodriguez zips a low, hard ball into the area, but the Man Utd man is there to see it away for a throw-in.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

17: A lovely ball from Xhaka who lifts his head up to spot the run of Rodriguez over on the left flank. However, the full-back cannot get there in time as it runs out of play.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

14: CLOSE! A superb cross into the area from Shaqiri who has been impressive in these opening minutes, but despite a leap from Behrami, it evades his head and goes past the post.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

12: Another test for Olsen from Dzemaili as Shaqiri lofts the ball into his path, but Dzemaili doesn’t quite connect properly and allows the Sweden goalkeeper to collect.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

10: CHANCE! For Sweden again!

Berg latches onto a poor clearance from the Switzerland defence before bursting into the box and hammering a shot again, but the leg of Akanji blocks it before he heads the ball away.

But Ekdal is waiting for the loose ball before going for goal himself, but flies high and wide over the crossbar.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

8: A good effort from Dzemaili as he lets fly from the top left corner of the area, but it goes straight into the hands of Olsen.

SHOT! At the other end for Sweden as the ball is tapped into the path of Berg by Toivonen but he skews his hammered effort wide of the post.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

7: Great ball into the area from Lang over on the right flank, but it flashes over a number of heads in the area before going wide out the other side of the box.

Switzerland try and get it back in before Sweden break down the field, but Augustinsson cannot latch onto the final pass and the ball goes behind.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

4: Another Sweden free kick, with Dzemaili the man to foul Forsberg, but it is deep in their own half and the Swedes can only pump the ball forward.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

3: First free kick of the match is given away by Xhaka as he bundles into the back of Toivonen around 25 yards out. Augustinsson pumps the ball towards the back post, which is met by the head of Claesson but he cannot get his effort on target under pressure from Xhaka.

SWEDEN 0-0 SWITZERLAND

1: Here we go then ladies and gents, the final day of the round of 16 is under way! Sweden get us under way at the Kretovsky Stadium.

HERE COME THE TEAMS

Andreas Granqvist and Valon Behrami lead the two sides out in Saint Petersburg, with Slovenian Damir Skomina our man in the middle this afternoon.

Next up, the national anthems with Sweden going first before Switzerland sing their tune.
