Mamelodi Sundowns beat Hasaacas Ladies to clinch maiden CAF WCL title

Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies failed to turn up in the final of the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League as they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The two clubs have dominated the tournament with impressive performances in the tournament and so a lot was expected of the two in the final but only one glittered.

With history beckoning the two sides Mamelodi Sundowns took the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated play while their Ghanaian counterparts tried to find their feet in the game. It was not surprising when the South Africans took the lead in the 32nd minute with a well-taken goal after a break from a rare attack from the Ghanaians.

Morifi connected with a well-taken cross from Mgcoyi to make it 1-0 for Mamelodi Sundowns.

After the goal, Hasaacas Ladies upped their game but could not find the equalizer as the first half ended with Mamelodi Sundowns in the lead.

Mamelodi Sundowns took over from where they left off in the first half as they continued to dictate the pace of the game and looked so assured on the ball unlike the Ghanaians were misplacing a lot of passes and showing nerves.

With the pattern of play in the second half, it did not take too long for the second goal to be scored by Mamelodi Sundowns. The provider of the first goal, Mgcoyi this time round was the finisher. VAR was called upon to ascertain if there was nothing wrong with the goal and fortunately for Mgcoyi and Mamelodi Sundowns the goal stood making it 2-0 in favour of the South Africans in the 62nd minute.

And as expected the second goal was the final nail in the coffin of Hasaacas Ladies even though they gave everything they had in them but their best was simply not good enough.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Mogolola was sent off in the 86th minute for violent play after the VAR called the attention of the center Referee. The numerical disadvantage did not do them any harm since it was too late for the Ghanaians to mount any serious challenge and cause any damage.

The referee finally blew her whistle to signal the end of the game with the scores at 2-0 in favour of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns thus become the maiden champions of the CAF Women’s Champions League without conceding a goal in the tournament.
