Manchester City claimed the Community Shield for the second successive season, with a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Liverpool, after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.
Raheem Sterling handed City a lead after 12 minutes, turning home from close range after a smart set-piece routine.
In an open encounter, chances came and went; Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar and Mo Salah hit the post for Jurgen Klopp’s men, while Sterling made a mess of things when through on goal with Kyle Walker waiting for a tap in at the other end.
That miss was soon punished, with Reds substitute Joel Matip heading home with 13 minutes remaining to level the scores.
Chances continued to come for both, with Kyle Walker’s outstanding goal-line acrobatics ensuring a penalty shootout – just as Salah looked set to celebrate handing the Reds victory.
From the spot, only Gini Wijnaldum missed, with Gabriel Jesus, now wearing City’s No.9 shirt, slamming past Brazil teammate Alisson to give City victory.
