NDC gurus endorse Spio-Garbrah

Representatives from all 34 constituencies branch executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region yesterday threw their weight behind Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a presidential hopeful of the party.

At a packed press conference held in Accra yesterday, the spokesperson of the group, Nana Baah, who is also a member of the Madina Constituency Executive of the party, said the NDC was at a crossroad because of the heavy defeat they suffered during the 2016 general election at the hands of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

He said their reason to root for Dr Spio-Garbrah to lead the NDC in the 2020 election was premised on the grounds that Spio has what it takes to rebuild and restore the hopes of NDC supporters.

According to the group, former President John Dramani Mahama veered off the road so badly that they sustained what they described as “injuries and a humiliating defeat” at the poll with “incompetence, corruption and nepotism being some of the stated reasons that accounted for the lose.

“We are here today to attest to the gloomy picture ahead of the NDC impending race to select a winnable candidate for the presidential race and whom we think can bring victory to the party come 2020. Despite the claims that Dr Spio-Garbrah was not coming into the race, we are happy to inform you that he has rather officially written to the General Secretary of the NDC to notify the party of his interest to be a candidate for the NDC in the 2020 general election,” the group stated.

According to the group, Dr Garbrah’s track records far-exceed all his contenders.

He added that Dr Spio-Garbrah is the only aspirant among the rest who has the experience after contesting against Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, one of the greatest party elders, Mr Eddie Annan, and the late Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills.

“We all know Dr Spio-Garbrah placed second in the 2006 NDC flag-bearership race and we eventually witnessed the victory of Professor Mills chalked in the 2008. It stands to reason, therefore, to say that it is now the turn of Dr Spio-Garbrah to assume the flag-bearership position of the NDC,” Nana Baah stated.

The spokesperson said apart from the rich experience of Dr Spio-Garbrah, he was also one of Africa’s pre-eminent civil servants, and an authority in mass communications who has held several high profile positions in the field.

“He was a former Minister of Communication, one-time boss of former President John Mahama and also one-time Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States and Mexico, a former Minister of Education, a former Minister responsible for Mines and Energy and a member of UNESCO Executive Board and also served as Cabinet Member between 1994 and 2000,” the group said.

The group noted that before Mr Garbrah’s appointment as the CEO at the Commonwealth Telecom Organisation, he was the CEO of his own business-consulting firm, Spio-Garbrah & Associates, based in Ghana.

“If all the aspiring candidates for the NDC flag-bearership will be candid and truthful to themselves, Dr Spio-Garbrah has been tested in 2006 and can be relied upon for the party’s victory in 2020.

“Dr Spio-Garbrah’s intelligence, articulation of ideas and the knowledge to turn things around in this country make him the unmatched candidate for other aspirants of NDC.

Besides these qualities, the group said his integrity was intact and cannot be smeared with corruption, incompetence, ineptitude and the disregard for party elders and foot soldiers.

According to them, “As delegates we have the responsibility to elect the best flag-bearer for the party; who in our view, reflects in the 85-90% of fresh faces we’ve witnessed from the branch and constituency elections of NDC across the country so far.”
